B, I saw them about 3 weeks back and they opened the show with Mz Hyde, which I guess makes since being the title track on the new album and all. Lzzy still did the a capella opening to It's Not You later in the show, though!
Sorry Greg, it's tomorrow. I will definitely post my thoughts afterwards.

So it was tonight then! It was hard to tell, b/c your post was timed around midnight, and I wasn't sure what day. But never mind all that...how was it?

You can rush the stage from there, zaz, and it will be even more epic when you do! Have fun!

The show was really cool. It was titled "an evening with Halestorm," so there was no opener. Halestorm played a total of two and a half hours spread across two sets -- one shorter acoustic set, followed by a regular electric set. So it was definitely a unique show.

The place was sold out, and I hear it holds up to 3,000 people. I guess that doesn't surprise me since they've been doing better on radio over the last year, and Philly is probably their hottest market since they are PA-based. I think they wanted to give the crowd a special show since they've always wanted to headline the Electric Factory, and they finally got to do it.

I didn't have significant expectations one way or the other, so nothing really surprised me. The show confirmed what I already knew -- that Lzzy has a phenomenal voice, and Arejay is one of the best rock drummers out there right now. I was very impressed with the overall energy and stamina of the group as a whole.

The show also confirmed my suspicion that a lot of the songs are much better live than on the album. Many of their songs have built-in crowd participation tools that don't translate as well on a studio album. For instance, the "hey! hey! hey!" chants during "Freak Like Me." Or the "na na na" part in "Daughters of Darkness," which frankly sounds a bit gay on the album, but is pretty cool live in terms of audience participation.

The acoustic set was pretty low-key, and added a whole element of intimacy to the show. Lzzy took the stage first, opening with a piano ballad called "Rose in December" which I had never heard, but apparently it's off of their 2001 EP Breaking the Silence. The set covered most of their softer tracks including "In Your Room" and "Break In". For the majority of the set, Arejay was sitting on a stage riser, which he pounded with his hands to make drum sounds. (Lzzy made fun of him for this, harking back to when he used to play the triangle in the school band.) Lzzy and Joe also did a cover of AC/DC's "You Shook Me All Night Long", which they apparently hadn't played since 2004. Unfortunately the set didn't seem to engage the crowd particularly much, since a ton of people just talked through the whole thing. But I enjoyed it nonetheless.

The electric set was obviously more of what I expected from the show. They ripped through the majority of the songs off both of their full-length albums. Arejay did his signature drum solo, and they also covered Guns N' Roses' "Out Ta Get Me." The energy level really picked up during this set, and I think the band were pretty blown away by the crowd.

It was pretty special seeing them in their home state. They reminisced about all the different bands that they had come to see perform at the Electric Factory over the years. There was definitely a sense of nostalgia and "I can't believe we've made it this far."

All in all, I'd say I came out a bigger Halestorm fan than I went in. I'm still not die-hard like I am about Alter Bridge, but I'd go see them again in a heartbeat. I'll post some photos soon.

Cool good review Alex, got me psyched for my show tomorrow! Which btw you should come to since I now have an extra ticket and have a slight chance to meet the band.

They're doing 3 Evening With shows, one softer set (Jekyll) and one heavy set (Ms Hyde). They really know how to put on a show and have so many songs that they play live that have never been released and once in a while they pull a few out. Tonight's show unfortunately isn't one of the Evening With shows but I will broadcast the audio on my Ustream channel www.ustream.tv/channel/qwiksand like I always do. They have wifi there so it should come out pretty clear. They have played this free venue every year at this time for the past 4 years. I can't wait.

Haha Cameron - I don't think I'll be able to make it, Cameron. Have fun though.

Sandy - I didn't know they were doing multiple "evening with" shows. The Jekyll & Hyde theme did occur to me, especially since they all wore white during the first set, and black during the second. I'll try to tune into your stream if I'm around this evening.

t'll be around 8pm eastern, a bit before to make sure its all working right. If the stream drops just refresh and it will come back. Ustream is very flaky. Because so many people are off from work and I was stuck in traffic for over an hour I am way back in the line, the furthest I've ever been but I still may get in. It's an open venue in the middle of a casino so you can see and hear them from wherever and it's free. They just did sound check. They start letting people into the venue around 6:30 and it holds about 350. Hopefully I'll be able to sit. They always get the longest lines.

i wasn't able to get in so I had to stand outside the railing and the sound was pretty muffled back there. I'm sure it sounded awful on the phone but the set was great. Arejay's stage presence and talent is just beyond words. I mean of course I'm staring at Lzzy all night but you can't help but watch the separate show Arejay has going on by himself.

Holy crud that show was incredible. Out of the nine concerts I saw this year, that wins #2 (grace potter still wins). Acoustic start was great, I got sucked in completely when they did gold dust woman, and I was blown away by the electric set. On top of that their stage presence is great, kept me laughing and entertained the whole time! Can't wait for them to come back! Had a friend backstage the whole time who said shed try to get me back to meet the band next time - hope so!

Also I left out a good deal of detail that I am now reminded of, looking at the set list.

Here's what they played:

Acoustic Set
  • "Rose in December" - Lzzy solo on piano
  • "Private Parts" - Full band, Lzzy still on piano
  • "Beautiful With You" - first time they've ever played this live
  • "I'm Not an Angel"
  • "All I Wanna Do Is Make Love to You" - Heart cover
  • "You Shook Me All Night Long" - AC/DC cover - just Joe on guitar and Lzzy singing
  • "Bet U Wish U Had Me Back" - Lzzy and Joe, both on guitar
  • "Hate It When You See Me Cry" - just Lzzy on guitar - she mentioned how she originally wrote this song alone in her room after finishing a bottle of wine, recorded it on her phone, and immediately sent it to the record label
  • "In Your Room"
  • "Gold Dust Woman" - Fleetwood Mac cover
  • "Better Sorry Than Safe" - including a snippet of Janis Joplin's "Little Piece of My Heart"
  • "Break In" - Lzzy solo on piano

Electric Set
  • "Mz. Hyde"
  • "Love Bites (So Do I)"
  • "Freak Like Me"
  • "Dirty Work"
  • "Out Ta Get Me" - Guns N' Roses cover
  • "Daughters of Darkness"
  • "What Were You Expecting"
  • "Dissident Aggressor" - Judas Priest cover
  • "Rock Show"
  • "Familiar Taste of Poison"
  • Drum Solo
  • "Slave to the Grind" - Skid Row cover
  • "You Call Me a Bitch Like It's a Bad Thing"
  • "It's Not You" - including Lzzy's a capella intro
  • "I Get Off"

Encore:
  • "Here's to Us"
  • "I Miss the Misery"

And a video that my friend filmed on my camera of "Here's to Us":

I decided to enable YouTube's anti-shake filter, and I think it came out pretty well.

Wow, that's an awesome set. I would kill to see the acoustic show. Be cool if they recorded one of the shows. That set would make for an awesome DVD.

that's about what I had. forgot to mention though that the people sitting next to me was a couple in their 70s at least. Weirdest thing. What's even stranger is the woman was more into seeing the band then anyone else, whenever someone stood in front of us in the aisle, she started yelling "Yo! Yooo!" at them motioning with her hand to move. Glad to see they still like heavy rock at that age though... figure they must be related somehow...

She's got a great voice and stage presence. Beauty is pretty irrelevant, IMO. I mean, I'm not an AB fan because of Myles' chiseled pecs or anything :shifty
