Yeah the battle scenes were fantastic, the bit where the AT-ATs emerge through the jungle was immense.

It had a lot of potential that I thought was constrained by the events that follow in eps 4, 5 and 6. Trying not to be too spoiler heavy here :lol

Excellent!

So yeah, they all die. I can't decide whether this is a bold play for what remains an off-shoot of a kids series beloved by adults, or something that just had to happen to justify the characters never getting mentioned again in the following chronology (which is still harsh when you think about it!). The unfortunate side effect is that the characters are never really developed beyond embryonic stages. Which is doubly unfortunate as I really liked many of them and wanted to know more about them, particularly the guardians. I'm still undecided on the success of the CGI Tarkin and Leia. Did think Krennic was a very good villain though, much better than Hux from TFA.

All in all I think it's a really successful first non-Skywalker/Jedi based Star Wars film (though the best moment still comes from a Skywalker, natch).

A friend of mine asked me last week if I thought they would all die because there's no mention of them in the original trilogy, so I had that thought going into it. Didn't really surprise me because of that, but it did suck because I really loved some of the new characters (mostly ticked I probably won't see Felicity Jones in another Star Wars film lol). I'm sure it was a tough decision to make, but I kind of liked the decision. They portrayed the Rogue One team as heroes who basically sacrificed their lives as a suicide squad. And I'm sure their hands were tied to a point as you said because none of those characters come up in the original trilogy.

I was honestly pretty impressed by the CGI renditions of Tarkin and Leia. I think it opens up a new door for the franchise to bring back old characters in limited roles. With the way technology is now, it seems like it'd be dumb to let the opportunities go to waste. I would have a problem if they did CGI to bring an old character back if the entire movie was based around that. But for a few cameos here and there, I think it's a pretty cool idea.

I liked seeing some of the old faces back in the film this time around. C-3P0 and R2 making their mark on yet another Star Wars film lol. And seeing Mothma with Bail Organa was a cool moment. And the last 5 minutes of the movie with Vader had my jaw on the floor. :lol

Yeah I think it totally worked as a storytelling device and didn't feel at all like a contrivance, just kinda sucked because you they could've easily made a series of films around that team and done something special. Funny you mention suicide squad, had been thinking it was almost what that film had been trying to do, done much better.

Sometimes Tarkin was eerily real, sometimes it went the opposite way and reanimated my disbelief, was pretty impressive overall though. Had heard they'd be doing it with him pre-release so was semi expecting it, but Leia caught me a little off guard.

That last act in general had so many oh snap moments. I hadn't thought I'd go to see it again but gah might have to check it out again after christmas, this time so I'm fully prepared for Vader to...Vade.

Vade. :lol

I think overall the movie had less big moments than The Force Awakens, but I also think it had less issues to nitpick over. This movie got me excited about watching the original trilogy for another round. I think it nailed the Rebels/Imperial war just as well as any of the old films, mostly because modern cinema can do so much more with those space battles. But it showed a grit to the war that hasn't really been on screen before, and it also showed how making the decision to do what it right isn't a black/white, Rebel/Imperial thing. It comes down to the choices of indivual characters. I liked that side of the film a lot.

I thought the new Droid was a cool character. He had a hint of C-3P0 in him with his statistics, but he had more dry sarcasm about him. I enjoyed his comic relief for the most part.

And also, I know it was a long shot to begin with, but I guess the "Jyn Erso is Rey's mom" theory bit the dust lol.

I liked K! He was like HK-47 from KOTOR with the voice of Sonny from I, Robot. Bowed out well, but slightly sad he didn't somehow make it out, then they miraculously find him in Ep 8 (IT HAPPENS IN STAR WARS) and then he goes around being passive aggressive to BB-8. May be fanboying there.

Haha, that actually would've been fairly entertaining to see him with BB-8. They could've pulled it off too by having him be shut down in a dormant state similar to what happened to R2. I think we're just gonna have to sadly live with the reality that we won't get these characters on the big screen anymore. I'm somewhat holding out hope for Felicity Jones doing a Jyn Erso cameo in the Rebels cartoon. The movie starts with her imprisoned as an adult, so I'm sure they could tie her story before Rogue One into the cartoon some way if they wanted to. I'd just like to see more of her in the series, but it's hard for that to happen now. I thought Jones's performance in this film was amazing.

Saw it on opening day. I was planning to see it in a few weeks when the crowds died down but some friends I know had someone drop out and I got their ticket.

Fantastic movie. So much better for me than The Force Awakens. I loved that they portrayed the Rebels in a less than perfect light and that they had Empire elements that were begrudgingly complicit. Exploring that gray area made for some excellent character development that the prequels tried to do and failed. I thought the serious tone of the dialogue did wonders for the film, because that's what you'd expect after the oppression of the Empire for 20 something years. I really appreciated keeping the comedic relief not only to a minimum but also primarily to one character as I'm annoyed how many films these days try to make all the characters quirky and witty every 3 minutes. Works for Marvel, doesn't work for Star Wars. I loved that while they introduced a few new things like the U-Wing, AT-ACT and the Hammerhead the movie really shone instead by showing new perspectives on traditional Star Wars iconic imagery. Having shots where people would look up between buildings and see Star Destroyers, seeing the explosion from the Death Star leaving the atmosphere, seeing what the walkers looked like to infantry when they're right on top of them, etc were all really good. I also think the director and director of photography did an amazing job with the cinematography and CGI shots they set up. Vader walking down the ramp, seeing the rings around the planet, most of the outdoor landscape sequences, and many other shots were just plain gorgeous and did a better job than Abrams did in TFA. I also felt the dialogue apart from having a serious tone was pretty heartfelt. The sequences with the father talking about/to his daughter were so well done, the pep talk she gave the soldiers knowingly going to their death was poignant but strong, the volunteering of the shame of the Alliance, the sequences with Vader's dialogue, all great writing. And finally that last scene...oh my god. I thought the movie was going to end with "form a boarding party" but when the camera cut to the dark hallway, then you hear that breath, then the red light fills the room...that scene was amazing. I thought they were going to have the stick Jedi use a lightsaber to get to the relay handle as he walked into open fire because when he held his wooden katana upside down, it had a metal bit to it. But they managed to pull off the whole movie without any flashy lightsaber battles and then used Vader just wrecking havoc in a tight space to show you his power. Growing up Vader was intimidating sure, but as I got older, I was kinda bored with him. The older lightsaber battles were never choreographed particularly well and it didn't help that Vader can't turn his head with that helmet. Apart from facing off against Luke and choking out some of his own guys, Vader never really seemed all that intimidating to me as I got older, especially not the badass that he's made out to be in the comics. But this was something else that really redeemed that character for me. Holding that one guy against the roof while cutting down his buddies, stabbing the one guy through the door, people screaming and running...man that was such a great scene.

Overall I think this is tied with Empire Strikes back as my favorite Star Wars film and I'll definitely be getting the Blu-Ray for special features. I was reluctant for yet another movie tied not only to the original trilogy but also directly to a Death Star (that makes 4 movies out of 8 now...) but they really won me over. And I love that they did because ever since seeing Return of the Jedi as a kid, the last 4 movies they've released just didn't capture that sense of amazement I once had. This is the movie I've been waiting a long time for them to make and I'm glad they did, especially because I'm so disinterested in the 7/8/9 series.

I would have changed 2 things though. The scene with the droid trying to ad-lib a line about taking the prisoners to prison then slapping the guy was pretty dumb. They could have done that sequence better. The second thing I would have changed was to make the stormtroopers more of a threat before the final battle. I don't think we saw a single stormtrooper win a fight or even get a kill on camera until the final battle, they were just non-threatening canon fodder. Some people were bummed out by the lack of an opening crawl, but I don't think they understood that the point of the crawl is to provide the setup. Showing the flashback to her father getting taken as a young girl does exactly that.

Like, as silly as bringing him back is, Vader faces off against Maul in the comics. I don't know about you, but I couldn't see the OT Vader doing that. The ending sequence Vader from Rogue One though? Definitely a shot.

I've seen people complaining that the fighting styles are so different between Rogue One and ANH, it ruins the continuity. My response to that is well yeah, the OT didn't have much 'real' choreography in it so to only way to make it match is to intentionally nerf the character and then the whole experience suffers.

Let's face it, the light saber fight in ANH kinda sucked if you're going to look at it objectively lol. Loved Empire, and the dual between Luke and Vader in ROTJ is pretty good. But I think Vader vs. Obi-Wan is only kinda good because it's nostalgic.

Yeah Empire's is the best saber fight for me by a way, you feel every hit. Was never a fan of the flippy stuff in the prequels. Or anything in the prequels. Cept Natalie Portman.

I enjoyed The Phantom Menace choreography. The camera angles could have been better to not show hits not landing but I thought it had a good balance between bringing something new, bringing a level of skill and aggression from what are basically warrior monks while maintaining a level grace all at the same time versus the old brawling type battles with Luke madly swinging. It made more sense to me if they were swinging a sword made of energy instead of a 30 pound claymore. Most of the stuff in Episodes II and III though just got stuck somewhere in the creative department of either trying to be lightsaber porn or one-upping. I did notice that Ep 1 gave us a double ended lightsaber, Ep II gave us dual wielding lightsabers and Ep III had Grievous going bonkers with 4 so while I thought gifs like these were funny I wasn't convinced they were that far fetched from what Ep 7 might surprise us with.

Just saw it. I honestly prefer it to TFA. I thought the characters were just out and out better.

Just saw it as well. Loved this movie. Although the plot was completely predictable and the end result was pretty much a given due to A New Hopes character roster.

I will say that my favorite part of the entire movie was the last minute or two when they beam up the plans, the rebel ship gets boarded and Darth Vader appears out of the power outage darkness. I saw that whole Vader scene on YouTube in a shitty bootleg quality but no matter how many times I saw it, It never prepared me for the big screen version. I got serious goosebumps and chills when I knew it was happening. Seeing the room go dark and Vaders signature breathing before the flash of his red lightsaber I fanboyed so hard. Plus him slicing up those Rebels and throwing them around with the Force... :cloud9 <3

It was hard to fit into the story as it was laid out, but that bit would've been improved still further if there was a main character in there, rather than just Vader-fodder.

Even so, I gotta give major props to every one of the actors playing the rebel soldiers. You felt their complete and total fear. That and the score really helped immerse me in that moment. I was shaking after that scene it was so intense. :lol

Was definitely a thrill, felt slightly guilty afterwards for enjoying the wanton slaughter so much :lol
