Songs that aaaallmost make the God-tier

Post by Crumbso »

So this caught my attention. There are certain songs in the AB catalogue that are almost gold-standard but don't quite make it. What are those songs to you? I'll start.

Show Me a Sign: The last minute of this song is just amazing. The solo is among the best Mark has ever done and the extended drum-solo ending with Myle's adlib wailing over it is just A+, God-tier, all-time-great stuff. It's just, the rest of the song is a little too extended and monotonous to me. It's not bad at all and the riff is really cool but it needs that extra dynamic variation to get it there.

These two songs have always struck me as "Epic Lite", this is what I'd change to push them to the epic tier IMO.

Pawns & Kings: Change the solos from the bridge to one longer Myles solo in the bridge and one longer Mark solo in either the bridge or outro (like TLH/TSOF-type solos for both). Give Mark more backing vocal time. Double that section from 3:23-3:45 but with no vocals on it for half of it.

Dying Light: double the section in the bridge at 3:18-3:30, change Myles' solo to something like on This Side of Fate or The Last Hero. Extend the outro with some drumming from Flip like from Marching In Time.

probably 'lover' for me

i absolutely love it, truly, but it doesn't feel 'essential alter bridge' to me because it sort of doesn't sound like alter bridge at all lol

I 100% agree with Show Me a Sign being on this list. It’s a top-10 AB song for me, awesome music that got me through some pretty dark times.

I don’t have anything to add here, unfortunately. There’s no borderline songs for me, they’re either god-tier in my eyes or not.

No way does Dying Light make the cut.

Weak lyrics during the chorus that i cant relate to, and the verses and solos are okay but nothing amazing.

I'll say Island of Fools, only because I think there is more that you can squeeze out of the song. I think it needs a final chorus. I consider the last segment that Myles sings to be kind of the closure of the bridge/solo/break area. I made a rough edit of the song once that had a final chorus but doesn't work perfectly because I don't have all the tools with notes and such to make it perfect.

What I also found interesting is how the opening to Show Me a Leader could've maybe somehow been saved for a different song entirely and helped make it epic all on its own. Imagine if Island of Fools also had that opening on top of a final chorus. Hot damn.

I also think if they could find a way to rearrange Before Tomorrow Comes so that there aren't any wah-wah's from Tremonti during the first two choruses (or they are very muted in comparison) and his wah-wah's in the final chorus are placed while Myles is singing in the final chorus like you'd hear live, mixed with a little of the violin work from RAH, and that is God-tier to me. They have all of the tools for this to happen if they wanted.

Show Me A Sign and Dying Light are both good picks. Might be a little controversial and say Words Darker Than Their Wings, which is great but lacks a certain something for me to take it up among their very best.
For all of the hope that it brings...

Walking on the Sky would be my pick. It’s by far my favorite song from the last album, but it’s just missing the “it” factor like Cry of Achilles, Blackbird, and Calm the Fire. It’s SUPER close for me, if it had a Fortress-type instrumental section somewhere in there it would probably reach that top tier of AB songs

If we're talking about tiers, I might as well make an entire tier list. Yep, I can never keep these kinds of things short.

Tier 1: These are some of my favorite songs of all time. I keep these on my "Max Zubic Radio" whenever I host open mics on Monday nights.

Open Your Eyes
Shed My Skin
Come To Life
Watch Over You
Isolation
I Know It Hurts
Home
Cry Of Achilles
Addicted To Pain
Cry A River
All Ends Well
Show Me A Leader
The Writing On The Wall
Losing Patience
Last Of Our Kind
Pawns & Kings

Tier 2: These are great songs. Definitely among my favorites for Alter Bridge, but not of all time.

One Day Remains
Burn It Down
Watch Your Words
Ties That Bind
Break Me Down
White Knuckles
Slip To The Void
Show Me A Sign
Words Darker Than Their Wings
The Uninvited
Peace Is Broken
Calm The Fire
Cradle To The Grave
The Last Hero
Native Son
Clear Horizon

Tier 3: These songs are listenable. They wouldn't be my first go-tos if I wanted to listen to Alter Bridge, but I like them enough to keep them on a playlist.

Metalingus
Broken Wings
In Loving Memory
Down To My Last
The End Is Here
Save Me
Before Tomorrow Comes
Blackbird
Ghost Of Days Gone By
Still Remains
Make It Right
Life Must Go On
Zero
Waters Rising
Fortress
My Champion
Crows On A Wire
Twilight
Island Of Fools
Wouldn't You Rather
In The Deep
Godspeed
Take The Crown
Walking On The Sky
Silver Tongue

Tier 4: I would rather not listen to these songs, but if they do just happen to come up, I wouldn't skip them.

Ahavo Rabo Taco Salad
Brand New Start
Buried Alive
Coming Home
Rise Today
One By One
Wayward One
All Hope Is Gone
Wonderful Life
Fallout
Breathe Again
Coeur D'Alene
Poison In Your Veins
You Will Be Remembered
Indoctrination
Pay No Mind
Tear Us Apart

Tier 5: I can't stand these songs and would be happier if I never listened to them again.

Find The Real
Bleed It Dry
Lover
Farther Than The Sun
The Other Side
This Side Of Fate
The Bitter End
Forever Falling
Dying Light
Last Rites
I'm in love with somebody...
Found someone who completes me...
I'm in love with somebody...
Oh yeah...
And it's Lzzy Hale!

I would say refining - the point of the thread is to list songs that are borderline epic, not to make a list of your ranking of every song :lol

I guess the Tier 2 songs fall under that category? Let's take a look at them again.

One Day Remains
Burn It Down
Watch Your Words
Ties That Bind
Break Me Down
White Knuckles
Slip To The Void
Show Me A Sign
Words Darker Than Their Wings
The Uninvited
Peace Is Broken
Calm The Fire
Cradle To The Grave
The Last Hero
Native Son
Clear Horizon

Nope. Most of these are awesome as is. I would double the length of the breakdown in Native Son, and add another guitar solo (possibly by Myles) during the break between the bridge and last chorus in Ties That Bind.

In Tier 1 songs, I would also double the length of the intro of Addicted To Pain, and extend the breakdown of Last Of Our Kind. But let's face it, these Tier 1/Tier 2 songs are epic already as is.

Ok, one more to add now that I think about it.

Burn It Down.

It’s such an underrated track, and a pretty deep cut. But the song is just fantastic. Can’t put my finger on EXACTLY what is missing, but it’s almost god-tier.

It’s actually such a deep cut I didn’t even consider it at first.
