Well, finally able to listen to the song on my home computer headphones (as opposed to listening to it on the phone while waiting to see Zac Brown Band). So, this is AB's approach of trying to be more futuristic-sounding? Is that the right term? In general, I do hate hate fade-out/sudden endings and AB has their fair share of those. I do like the bridge verses in this one. Also, I think I can recall the chorus easier in Pay No Mind where it took a while for me to remember the chorus for Wouldn't You Rather. Overall, I think it's a winner. It may not end up being in my fave five of the album, but honestly if you look at the songs that AB had released before the album is out, only Open Your Eyes was the only song released before an AB album is out that's in my fave five (yes, I don't have Words Darker than their Wings in my fave five of AB III).
Besides, the strengths of AB is not heavily reliant on singles. It's reliant on searching for those great gems when we hear the album in full. I still think the best has yet to come, but I think these two songs they got out so far are solid so that bodes well for the album. I also do think Wouldn't You Rather and Pay No Mind > Show Me A Leader and My Champion so they got that going for them.
On a side note, while I was sporting the AB shirt, that I got from the Royal Albert Hall DVD bundle, at the Coheed and Cambria/Mastodon show and Shinedown show, there was a few people that told me that they liked Wouldn't You Rather and wanted to know when the album is out. I take that as a win in my book.

Oddly enough, I think I might like WYR than this. But I still like the new things they try musically, like the intro. Even the chorus is a bit unique for AB.
That doesn't mean I love the songs. If I ranked all AB songs, I think both would prob end up in the lower half for me. But I appreciate the effort to bring in something new.

The synth thing at the beginning sounds a bit amateurish but overall the song works. I didn't like it at first, I thought "What the hell is this?" The chorus didn't really get me. But after listening to it a bit more I think I like it. I think Tremonti really is inspired by cyberpunk. He even wrote a book about it. Which I haven't read yet.

A willing hand
A scapegoat
The sacrificial lamb
It's so cold
A one way scam
That takes hold
So devious, the plan
But time
It will unravel and expose
Us for the fools we are
We pay no mind
We no pay no mind at all
We must be blind
When will this ever stop?
When the last man falls
Who’ll be the first to rise and call you out?
Who’ll be the first to draw the line?
Indifference a lasting curse
Resilience, your blessing in disguise
The millions you stand to hurt
Still willing to stand right by your side
But time
It will unravel and expose
Us for the fools we are
We pay no mind
We no pay no mind at all
We must be blind
When will this ever stop?
When the last man falls
Who’ll be the first to rise and call you out?
Who’ll be the first to draw the line?
So entitled since the day that you were born
Still we hear you screaming give me more give me more
So entitled since the day that you were born
Still we hear you screaming give me more give me more
So emboldened since the day that we were torn
You got a way with murder
I wont let you anymore
We pay no mind
We no pay no mind at all
We pay no mind
We no pay no mind at all
We must be blind
When will this ever stop?
When the last man falls
Who’ll be the first to rise and call you out?
Who’ll be the first to draw the line and walk?
And make you pay the price for what you are
But in the end we’ll pay no mind.

Shea to the rescue!
I think there should be an extra "me" in that bridge: Give me more, give me more

Is that not there? I swear I edited it to fix that when I first postedgbruin wrote:Shea to the rescue!

What's this song about?
Surprisingly, no one has change his or her mind
If only there were a rational, measured, polite discussion going on in another thread on this very topic.
But there is a pretty animated and heated and contentious discussion over the last 10 pages or so in the AB VI Studio/Recording thread about just this question.

Re: Surprisingly, no one has change his or her mind
This is one thing I've never understood about the community here, the drive to create 63-page threads that go on and on about 25 different topics, when the whole point of a thread-based forum such as this one is the ability to have nicely-defined, clean, separate threads for each topic. I get the point behind the "random Alter Bridge thread" being ongoing, but something like the "AB VI recording thread" is rendered obsolete once individual songs begin to surface.gbruin wrote:If only there were a rational, measured, polite discussion going on in another thread on this very topic.

Anyway...
I have to admit, again, first listen, I was a little bit "hmmm... okay.(?)" about this song. But after having it roll around my brain for several days, OMG, this song is a beast. The intro is amazing, and while I could see the synth thing getting tiresome if it's overused, it absolutely makes the song pop here. Myles is on point. The song is a banger. I'm thinking I'd rather have had this as the lead single than Wouldn't You Rather, given the choice, but it's nice that both songs are out (though I'm thinking Pay No Mind was only released as damage control once some asshole leaked a potato copy of it on YouTube). It has me thoroughly fired up for the album!
My only complaint is having these 2 songs, and then having to wait 2 and a half months yet for the album to release. Either more songs are going to get put out there before then (which kind of kills the impact of an album release), or I'll be so tired of these 2 that I'll skip them on the album forever.
Re: Surprisingly, no one has change his or her mind
Think it was planned, there was a month long gap between Wouldn't You Rather and its release and iTunes had the telltale song length a few weeks back. If the pattern holds, we should get Take the Crown and In The Deep (or vice versa) as prerelease tracks at the end of August and September.TenaciousBe wrote:My only complaint is having these 2 songs, and then having to wait 2 and a half months yet for the album to release. Re: Slinking back to the sidelines
It's a glorious thread. Single threads are but passing clouds in comparison. It will be studied by future generations, patiently awaiting AB7, who will solemnly acknowledge that "ah, but they spent much longer on drums this time around."gbruin wrote: B called my thread obsolete...

Re: New AB Song Pay No Mind is Sick AF
I agree with the title of this thread! This song grabbed me much more than WYR and it's great to hear the guys exploring some new directions for their sound. Somehow they managed to layer in an electronic element while maintaining Flip's signature groove – incredible.
