@anguyen92: you should focus on the drums, and especially the cymbals. They really sound awful, and I can't understand why Elvis is still unable to record them properly after so many years and albums.

I was just listening to Dust in my car today and the cymbals (especially hihats) were annoying. I'm debating tracking down a FLAC copy to see if it's any clearer. It sounds like a low quality YouTube rip.

Don't waste your money. Some engineers/producers can record drums correctly. Elvis has showed up multiple times that he can't, and they sound just as bad in FLAC as they do in mp3.

I think Mark and Myles sit on those songs for a longer while. They then bring them to the rehearsal space, Flip and Brian learn their parts, little adjustments are made and the record is done.

I would agree with you if they brought full songs to the band. They don't, and they insist in mixing up Myles and Mark's ideas in each song.
That's why, IMHO, they need much more than a couple of weeks to let those songs develop organically in a room.

But alas, they've shown again and again that they don't want to get out of their comfort zone. We've had those debates before, and we'll for sure have them again the future, since they're so set in their ways.

Something went terribly wrong with Songbird, though.

I have two separate theories:

1) Songbird was a demo track, previously recorded with different equipment and then later slapped onto the record.

2) The intro guitar riffs sounded so much like Mother, that they said: "Gosh, we need to do something to differentiate these songs! I know, suck all of the life of the mix and quality out of Songbird. Give it all mids, no highs or lows. Perfect, now they are two different tracks!"

I am leaning toward the latter. I wish they did that to Mother, instead.

Songbird is an absolute gem .....heresy

I love the song. I'm talking about the mix. It's best you read about what the conversation was and get through the points in my post before making that post. Songbird is of my favorites, and I wish it got the mixing treatment that it deserves.

I don't remember the pre pro/recording months from The Last Hero.... i think they're similar, but Show Me A Leader was released in the end of July, so hopefully that happens again!
