It often isn't. Both the Bogner Uberschall and the PRS MT15 are high gain amps. In order to get the amount of gain that Mark uses those amps are designed to distort and increase distorting as much as they can. If Mark is also using high output pickups, there might not be enough clean headroom at the desired volumes to get as clean a sound. This is why Mark used to tour with Fender amps as well as Mesa Boogie, and why most high profile touring artists use multiple amps. I have this issue with my Hughes and Kettner Tubemeister. The clean channel is great with single coils, but introduce high output pickups like those in a 90's Les Paul and it doesn't stay clean very long.

The problem is he has no excuse as to why he wouldn't bring a Fender as well. They're available to rent everywhere, their production value is higher than ever and he still brings so many 4x12s he could easily drop one and replace it with a Fender Twin and have no big increase in freightage. ESPECIALLY in a show like this where they're almost focusing on the cleaner, softer songs. Doing Festivals where you play your heavy rock singles or the smaller venue Tremonti tours, sure, why not. But this is a special occasion where you want everything to sound as good as it possibly can.

Well you kinda answered your own question here - there's no excuse to simply not bring out a clean amp. That said - Mark hasn't used the MT15 live to the best of my knowledge. I think he still uses the Boogie Triple Rec in his setup (maybe he doesn't anymore). That amp, for example, is 150 watts (plenty of volume and headroom) and the clean channel has independent gain and master volume controls. With those amps it's very easy to dial in a nice clean sound with little gain by keeping the channel gain low and increasing the master. That's SUPER basic stuff.

There was no question about it, It was a mistake from Tremonti imo.

There are still reasons why Mark wouldn't want to use the clean channel on the Triple Rec though. It still depends on the volume; you can put the gain as low as you like, if you're cranking the master volume the power section is going to distort eventually, even with 6L6s. in fact, if you're turning the gain down, the higher you're going to need to need the master and it's going to get power amp distortion possibly even sooner. We know that Flip is a loud drummer and Myles is using a 180w Diezel, so that might not be enough for a sound Mark is happy with. Mark may also think (as do I) that the clean channel on the Triple Rec is a bit naff. Considering he did cart around two Fender Twins for decades I think that's possible.

I think the more likely scenario is he just doesn't want too. I'm in a band where the second guitarist refuses to use pedals, let alone DREAM of using a clean channel. Mark may have a similar philosophy of preferring the simpler stripped down rig. I would maintain that for the RAH shows, he was very wrong to think like that, but he might be a bit too proud to go back to it.

I think you and I are pretty much on the same page here, we agree his current approach isn't serving the songs well. He could probably get away with this more stripped back rig for Tremonti shows, but AB requires the dark and the light, the heavy and the delicate. It's what is beautiful about their music. This rig hinders that.

And you are right, the clean channel in the Triple Rec might not be to his liking, but clearly he isn't interested in getting good, true clean sounds anymore. Or else he'd simply bring another amp to get those sounds.

The CD mix is dreadful. Ripping the Blu-ray audio to my PC then playing it in my car was far superior; not just quality (actually I think at the quality level this is the worst of their concert albums), but the overall mix as well.

anguyen92, Brian's bass can be heard pretty well as it takes the center channel with Myles. It doesn't have very low LFE's though, so it is conspicuously absent when considering one's subwoofer.

Perfection is impossible, but many things done incredibly well will get you really close. There are so many tiny details production wise that could've been done better. Most of them have been mentioned in here, so I won't repeat them, but most of them are so frustratingly easy to fix. Most of them make no sense and never should've reached the final stage of this project.

Performance wise this is a fantastic DVD. From the three DVD's it's got the best setlist, it's the most ambitious, and feels the most "epic". I lacks the passion of Amsterdam, but it's been 10 years, so that's understandable. I really hope they were inspired by this experience, because I'd love AB VI to sound like the majority of this DVD.

Funny thing, Timo. I, too, lack the passion of Amsterdam and I don't blame you. They look to be fun people to be around with, especially in concerts.

Mt pre-order arrived day before last. I got the Gold edition from the AB website so it came with the book. Looking at it I thought it was kinda weird I got two copies of both the CDs and the DVD/BluRay but I'm not complaining. If one set ever gets lost or damaged I have another.

Watched it that night and was taken back to those nights and all the little bits you remember later on after being at a concert.. if that makes sense. The sound is excellent in my opinion BUT I would have liked the vocals a tinch louder and the orchestra as well. The BTS bits were good and I enjoyed those.

I was in the pit almost on the rail the first night and in the stands on Brian's side the second night so I had a different perspective of sound each night, the orchestra came through a heck of a lot more on the BluRay though so I was pleasantly surprised hearing pieces I hadn't heard as clearly live.

The End Is Here was my fave of both nights. It was bloody immense. WDTTW a close second.

I will have to try that. My first listen was the Blu-Ray through a good 5.1 system and I thought it was fantastic. Since then I've played the CD through my car stereo, which is a pretty decent setup, but the whole thing was meh. Totally different experiences based on the medium. That's really unfortunate. Gonna try ripping the Blu-ray like you suggest because I listen to music in my car far far more than I can while at home, and it's a shame not to hear this as good as it can be.

This. Some of my "favorites" include:
"Thaas is not the aand! Thaas is not the aand!" - Cry of Achilles.
"Gaaah, set out towards the sun. Gaaah, soon your day will come" - Words (To be fair, most of the performance was top notch, but that part in the bridge always bugs me.)
"The Oh singalong part" - Open Your Eyes (The sudden switch to aah's in the high part then back to oh's in the lower always sounds so cheap)
"The greatest sin, denied again, when will it aaahnd!" - Writing on the Wall
"Let the wind carry you home, blawckbird fly away" - Blackbird (I think he actually got it as close to the record as he's done in the last few years during the second chorus though)

All that being said, I do have to give Myles some credit. He actually had quite a few strong performances at this show, despite some that fell a bit short.

Lmaooo !! You took those words out perfectly :facepalm
Thaaas is not the end

Gaaaaahh set out towards the sun

Guys I finally received my copy yesterday from napalm , delivery in India . It took 7 days to reach India.
My thoughts about the show ,
The best overall show of alterbridge till date.
If you people have audio cd of the show, just burn them or throw it in trash.
Rip the entire show from DVD/Bluray and convert it into MP3. That sound so much better .
I first heard the cd and was pissed off at Myles skipping lines and those funny words he uses thaas is not the end etc.
But watching the DVD , I hardly found anything to complain about.
The show was really really good .

If only I could point out something,
I would have loved a lot more behind the scene footage , there rehearsal etc.
And would have dumped all the songs they played from last hero. The least favourite album of alterbridge. Heard it almost 100 times , still It just doesn't impress me , don't know why.

Highlight of the show was open your eyes ..
Wow the ending of the show , all members and orchestra coming on stage woww ..
Amazing moment..

For me
Alterbridge - Live at Amsterdam ( Best sounding )
Live at Wembley - ( Best visual experience)
Royal Albert hall - ( Best overall experience visual + sound )

LOL she could always use another fan.

Anyway, I'm doing a little mini-project of taking the BD audio, doing a little mixing on the low end (as others have mentioned), and going to save those clips to MP3 instead of the CD files and their mix. That one is just a bit too rough for me.

What are you using to rip the Blu-ray to mp3? I'd love to do that too. I'm not savvy enough to remix anything, but the CD sound is pretty disappointing and if I could listen to the Blu-ray instead, I'd never play the CD again. Any advice would be much appreciated!
