Royal Albert Hall DVD

Postby RavishingRik » Thu May 18, 2017 2:47 pm

"MT: We’re touring through the end of the year but we’ve got a big project going on – in October we’re playing with a 52-piece orchestra at Royal Albert Hall [in London] for two nights and we’re gonna’ film that and make it a DVD. We’re really excited about it."

Anyone else insanely excited for this?

I'll be more excited about this once it has been officially confirmed and that the dates are set.

Hopefully they actually release it after they film it.

They better! Especially being a once in a lifetime thing for many fans, it would be a good way to treasure the memory. I hope this really is happening!

Rockband + Orchestra seems always somewhat weird to me.

I think it works myself.

Take a look at Within Temptation for example.

Or Metallica's S&M. There are more bands that did this, and I kinda like it actually.

It just needs to be mixed right. Plenty of rock and metal bands have done it successfully, and I think it would be an amazing fit with Alter Bridge.

This x100. And the arrangements of the orchestra have to be well-done. I wonder who they're working with on this.

Your playing has to be extra tight if you intend to pull it off. This is going to request some major rehearsal time.

I think they can do it. I believe in these boys. If they pulled out a performance like Amsterdam with an orchestra, we'd be set.

There is a very interesting behind the scenes documentary about Metallica's show with a symphony orchestra in 1999 :

Basically, the whole orchestra follows the drummer's tempo.

What interview is that quote from?

I know it sounds very cynical, but this is quite an ambitious project for a band like Alter Bridge, given that they aren't known for their ambition when performing. I seem to remember Gavin Harrison from Porcupine Tree saying that Royal Albert Hall charge an awful lot of money for a band to film and release a performance in their venue (I think Porcupine Tree wanted to film their DVD Octane Twisted there). I seem to remember that Craig Blundell said he said to pay thousands just to release a video of him playing one Steven Wilson song in that venue.

Dream Theater did a whole orchestra for their 20th anniversary concert, Score. I can see some AB material sounding amazing with a full orchestra

Hmm no mention of this by the Royal Albert Hall. Colour me extremely sceptical....

It seems to be a really big and complicated undertaking in terms of logistics, money, time, rehearsals, then releasing it... I really do keep my fingers crossed for it to work because I like orchestral arrangements. I only hope this task is not too big for them.
