Favourite Song from The Last Hero
Re: Favourite Song from The Last Hero
Genuinely surprised Island Of Fools is ahead of This Side Of Fate

Island of Fools, destroyer of epics.
For all of the hope that it brings...

I picked Crows on a Wire but I was torn between this and Cradle to The Grave.
I still not on board of the Island of Fools train...

I'm so surprised by all the love for Island of Fools! Usually songs at the extreme ends of the soft-heavy spectrum are controversial because people just have different tastes. The fact that what's likely their heaviest song yet is so popular says a lot about just how good it is! Consider me on this bandwagon (although I still cant pick between Island of Fools and This Side of Fate as my #1 yet).

I love both spectrums of soft/heavy, but I like a good song first and foremost. I think island of fools of is a prime example of going heavy without sacrificing melody.
Re: Favourite Song from The Last Hero
The Last Hero reminds me so much of Cry of Achilles. Except this is played in more of a lower register and has a bit of a frustrated, exasperated feel to it.... like "we've tried so many things. Fuck it." Achilles started Fortress perfectly, and TLH ends this album perfectly. I don't think you could put this song at the beginning of this album and it have the same feel to it. I think they did a great job.
Probably top 5 in their catalogue imo. This Side of Fate is a good song upon listening to it, but when you look at the lyrics and just see that it basically just repeats itself 4 times, it's kind of meh.

Island of Fools is the 15th worst song on the record.
I think Twilight is the worst.

^ That's one of the few songs that doesn't suffer from being overproduced I think.

The Other Side
Re: Favourite Song from The Last Hero
How is there too much going on in Island of Fools??? It's pretty straightforward, it's just heavy.

Re: Favourite Song from The Last Hero
Island of Fools has a bit of a darker Calm the Fire thing going on, which was my favorite on Fortress. "You MUST believe, courage is all that you need!" So good...

I really don't get what the big deal is with Island Of Fools. It's cool but it's one of the weaker on the album for me. It's heavy so those who really like that will say it's the best. Kinda how people felt about White Knuckles but Blackbird was on that album so...

I dont even love it bc its heavy, its just a well put together song. The icing on the cake is the riff, the bridge and the final chorus. Love that shit.
Thanks Timo!

Re: Favourite Song from The Last Hero
i know I'm not one that prefers their heaviest stuff over the ballads or more straight rock songs. But there's something about the melody in the chorus and bridge. It's perfectly in Myles's sweet spot. High, but not always stratospheric. I hear passion in his vocals. The guitar parts compliment each other well. And Tremonti's solo is crazy. Will wrote:I really don't get what the big deal is with Island Of Fools. It's cool but it's one of the weaker on the album for me. But ask me tomorrow, and Cradle will be my favorite. It's just come down to those two for me and it has everything to do with how well written the melodies are.
And Blackbird will forever be their greatest song.
