RITE OF RIFFAGE

MARK TREMONTI brings his solo project, along with some big concepts, to the UK…

Hey Mark! Your new record, A Dying Machine, broke the top 20 of the UK albums chart. Are you still on a high from that?

“Nice! It feels amazing – you put your heart and soul into a project, and when you see people respond to it in a positive light it makes you feel good about what you do. It makes you want to work even harder.”

The record follows a dystopian concept about lab-grown, synthesised humans, and you’ve written a book to accompany it. How was the whole project different from making a traditional album?

“Creatively, it was probably one of the most satisfying things I’ve ever worked on. Having the combination of the book and the album really helped create more of a 3D story. You get the record and you get to hear the story. It was definitely something that, when I took it on, was a lot of work, but I’ve had the final revisions of the book and I’m so happy I went through it all.”

All that’s left now is for the story to hit the big screen as a film or TV series…

“Oh, that would probably be the best thing to ever wish for. I’ve had friends and family say, ‘This would be great if it was a movie.’ I have a friend who loves the story, and he’s got friends who are big-time directors that he said he would set up a meeting with to tell them the story and see where it goes from there. But this is all in the back of my mind. Still, it would be amazing if it became a Netflix series!”

When a band announces a concept album it can raise some concerns among fans. Are you happy with the reaction to yours?

“Yeah, I feel good about it. If one of the bands I like said they’re doing a concept record, I might be a little worried about if I was going to be into that concept. However, when I wrote this, I made sure that every song could relate to people outside of the story; these songs come from different people’s points of view in the story. It’s a very human story, even though it’s not about all humans. It relates to everyday life for the most part.”

How do you go about bringing this concept to life on the live circuit?

“Well, at first we’re only going to be doing four songs off the record, but we’ll be adding a little bit more here and there. In a perfect world, we’ll be playing a bulk of the record at these shows and mix in the old. We have to work our way up to telling the story live.”

You’re four albums in now with your solo project, Tremonti. How have you adapted to being the frontman again after spending a year and a half solely playing guitar in Alter Bridge?

“Mainly just growing the confidence. When I first did the first record I was a little apprehensive about it; I was a little bit worried about singing, taking on 100 per cent of the lyrical duties and stepping out of my comfort zone. Now that we’re four records deep, I’m completely comfortable with it, the only part that is still tough is being that frontman. You know when you go from not being a frontman for a year and a half and coming back to it, you’ve got to relearn everything again and get over that awkward stage of speaking to people onstage.”

Headfirst jump into past inspires Myles

MYLES Kennedy and the Conspirators come to the O2 Liverpool on Saturday, July 7.

Myles Kennedy – known for his work with Slash of Guns N Roses and his band Alter Bridge – had finished his first solo album, then he threw it away.

“I had been working on a record for about seven years, but when I listened to it with a fresh perspective, I thought it wasn’t the right first step to take in this journey— its shelf life had expired.”

So he started over, and found himself “writing like a madman.”

More than 20 songs spilled out in a short period of time, and as Kennedy listened to his work, he began to comprehend the direction in which the music was pulling him.

“It became incredibly obvious what the source of inspiration needed to be lyrically, and I realised it was time to jump headfirst into something I’ve been putting off for my whole life as a writer.”

What eventually emerged was Year of the Tiger, an album almost entirely focused on the loss of Kennedy’s father when the singer was just four years old.

Delving into this emotional territory required a musical approach far different from the hard rock that has defined Kennedy’s arena-filling career.

The majority of the record was written on acoustic or resonator guitar and recorded directly to tape using a limited number of tracks. Kennedy himself plays banjo, lap steel, bass, and mandolin in addition to guitar.

Playing live this summer, fans can expect a raw and honest performance, which will show a whole new side to the singer.

That was my peak. I will never have another image/play on words idea as good as that one.
