Re: Listening to Addicted to Pain
1. The bridge/outro... "Cry out!" Instant slow jam headbang
2. Myles vocals... the man is on top of his game
3. The entire intro
4. The solo... I for one love it. I love that fast bit where it sort of repeats it's self.
5. Flip's drumming... the only cool part he had on ABIII was the outro of SMAS. This is awesome!

Re: Listening to Addicted to Pain
So after my initial listens last night, I poured myself an adult beverage after getting off work this afternoon and sat down for a few more. (Kudos to AB for not crying about the leak and instead releasing the HQ version - or at least as HQ as YouTube gets.) Few more thoughts:
My initial impression was "this song is pretty basic." And compared to some of their other work, it is! But then I realized...I don't need a bunch of complex, goofy shit to make me like their songs. This song breathes SO much better than the material off the past two albums. Myles is in the pocket, I love Mark's straightforward, no-nonsense driving riffs, and I think the drums are massive. I'm not a bassist so it doesn't bother me that Brian's bass holds down the low end and not much more. (I bet the twin-guitar and bass combo will be effing massive when the song is played live.)
It's OK with me that this song is a straightforward, fairly common format, because AB does it better than anyone else. When you have supreme musical talent, don't make it so obscure that people are confused. When you know your balls are bigger than everyone else's, put them front and fucking center for everyone to see.

Re: Listening to Addicted to Pain
Anyone anticipating a sing-a-long "Cry Ouuuuuuut!" bit during the live shows?

1. I, like most other people on here, love the bell at the beginning. Makes it seem like we're in for an epic songJim wrote:Ok so I'm in the mood for TOP 5's right now...

2. Flip hasn't sounded this good to me since Metalingus. Absolutely love the drum work
3. Im just gonna be pretty broad here and say the guitar work. Love the riffs, bass lines, and I actually like Mark's solo unlike alot of people on here
4. The lyrics, especially in the verses, are really well done in my opinion. It almost seems like I can tell who wrote what. To me, verse 1 definitely sounds like something Mark would write, and it sounds like Myles wrote verse 2 based on the lyrics
5. It's something different. Myles' vocals seem heavily influenced by his work with Slash, and Mark seems to bring his faster, heavier guitar work that sounded like something from All I Was, which isnt a bad thing IMO. I was blown away when I first listened, becaue I was not expecting anything like this at all. Alter Bridge has a different sound to them, and right now I'm digging it and very intrigued to hear what the rest of the album sounds like. CANT WAIT for Fortress to drop \m/

Re: Listening to Addicted to Pain
The whole band is on fire but Flip's drumming on Addicted To Pain is , September 30th can't come quick enough
Re: Listening to Addicted to Pain
Missed the drama yesterday, saw the AB tweet at lunch, listened a couple of times tonight, skimmed through this thread. Going to give it a rest so I hear it in the album context, but bits of it are already stuck in my head. It's definitely Alter Bridge, so I like it. The drums sound like All I Was to me, I'm not a fan of that, but there's plenty of other good stuff in the song so no big deal. Some of Myles' double vocals sounded a little odd to me but that was first or second listen on my iPhone so can't judge by that.
Not overanalyzing the lyrics yet but I like them. Reminds me of You Waste Your Time, Standing in the Sun, and a lot of Alter Bridge. To my lyrically AB often says, yeah, this sucks right now, but get up and fight for yourself, noone else will and it'll be worth it, move! And I need that often and love that about them.
Most of all I bet this is going to be tremendous fun live

Re: Listening to Addicted to Pain
1. Production. It feels like Elvis has finally been listening to us, and letting Myles' vocals shine out front without a whole lot of effects. Speaking of which...
2. Myles' vocals. Man. There's a power and rawness to his voice that we didn't really hear on ABIII. Hoping the rest of the album sounds this good!
3. The bells. Adds such a big, atmospheric feel to everything.
4. That little momentary stop between the first verse and chorus. Makes the chorus hit that much harder.
5. Dat drum tone. Feels like every hit is reverberating off my spine.

That bit is awesome, and I also love that it's different before every chorus. So many little things in this song that add up to a bundle of awesome.TenaciousBe wrote:4. That little momentary stop between the first verse and chorus. Makes the chorus hit that much harder.
For all of the hope that it brings...
