Myles vs the original singer
Myles vs the original singer
I had a pretty cool thread idea. Seeing as Myles has covered loads of different singers during this time with Slash, even Alter Bridge, Bofest etc, and some of the singers he's covered are brilliant singers I thought it would be good to compare Myles' versions of the songs to the original versions. We'll do one song every three days or so, then someone can put a new song.
Seeing as it's recently been added to the setlists, we may as well start with Gotten.

Adam Levine

I gotta go with Myles for this one, I think it's really good the amount of passion and emotion he can put into a song which he didn't even write. I do like the studio version, I think Adam does a good job, but Myles brings it to another level. Slash plays a better outro too. Although, I do prefer the earlier live versions which wasn't so high pitched (for a lack of the technical term).

Re: Myles vs the original singer
To me they sound kind of similar...I really preferred Myles' first version from a week or so ago that came up on Youtube. I agree with you, I thought his lower register brought out a lot more emotion in the chorus. I probably still give Myles a slight edge in the video you posted in here, but it's not as good as how he was originally doing it.

Yeah, I chose to use that video mainly because it was the first link I found, but he definately does show a lot of emotion when singing it, in that video, when he sings "But do not make me think of him", you can just tell by the look on his face that the song resonates with him emotionally too. I can't remember what exactly he sings, but he adds a bit more vocals during the outro which is pretty cool. If Myles could sing it lower, but with the same emotion and the outro I think we'd have the best version. Also, for some reason, the live version of Gotten reminds me alot of Bon Jovi's Always.
For comparison...

I do think they should record this version of the song as a bonus track for the next album. It's the only song on Slash's first album which has actually been given new life to it by being played live. I can't believe it took them so long to play it.

Re: Myles vs the original singer
Myles does sing it with a lot more emotion...which to me proves singers don't have to write lyrics to connect well with a song. I will say I'm a fan of the lyrics in Gotten, gotta give Levine props for that.

Hah, I love the comparison with Always. I made that connection too. There's a live version of Always where Jon adds in the outro: "Through the wind, through the snow, through the driving rain, I'd crawl all the way home oh baby". I was kinda expecting Myles to sing that the first time I saw the video of Nottingham when he finished that high note in the outro.
On topic: I'll have to go with Myles. Don't wanna sound like a fanboy, but I really think his voice brings the song to another level.

Haha, it's funny you mention that live version of Always. After I made that post I went straight onto youtube and watched that video with the outro

Does nobody else have a opinion? I think the idea of this thread is pretty cool, but it gets kinda looked over because it's in the Myles-section

The first time, I've heard Gotten, that was essentially the one song I was actually hoping that he and Slash would cover one day. Now that I've heard it with Myles, of course, he nailed it out of the park.
You guys can still go ahead and talk about Gotten, but I want people's opinion on this voices of this song.

Robert Plant

Celebration Day performance

Now, since the tempo between the two performances are different, that might have affected the structure of the songs and the voices. For me, I prefer AB's performance because of that one reason, but there was no doubt that the original was damn awesome.

Both versions of Led Zeppelin's Kashmir blow Alter Bridge's version away. It's still a good cover, but it doesn't come close to the greatness of Led Zeppelin imo.. I prefer Robert's voice on this song too..

I like them both.
But that live Zep version is mind blowing.

Wow that live version is incredible...
It does though make me appreciate the dynamics that AB added to their cover though; they really re-cultivated and formed some peaks and valleys in that song, quite nicely. I had forgotten how much of a drone/trance type of song it was originally by Zep.

Re: Myles vs the original singer
I've never really listened in depth to Led Zeppelin before, but I watched the live version posted above. I'd say, although that wasn't Myles' best live performance, I did prefer his voice to Robert Plant's in that video. AB also played quite tightly for that version as well.
Next I think it would be cool to discuss Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah, because that will be a really difficult one for me at least, but I'll give it a couple more days.

IMO, no one, ever, ever-ever, can even come close to touching Buckley's cover of Hallelujah... But Myles does do a very nice job, much better than 95% of the Hallelujah covers out there

Re: Myles vs the original singer
I am bumping this thread because I keep listening to this song a lot. The song is Shooting Star
Myles

Paul Rodgers

It is hard to judge this because of the tone. The original has that hard rock vibe that I like while Myles' version was soft, acoustic, and had a different intimate feel to it.

Better than Myles, not as good as Jeff.
