Best album of all time (Round 1)

Post by Josiah »

I thought this would be fun. Nominate your 20 favorite albums ever, then in round 2 nominate 10 of the top 20, then in round 3, nominate 5 of the top 10, then in round 4 we'll nominate 2 of the top 5, then in round 5 we'll vote on the top 2. Remember, while it says "Greatest album of all time" You aren't choosing albums based on popularity or influence, vote solely based on personal preference.

Mine in no particular order at all.
Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin
Led Zeppelin IV - Led Zeppelin
The Wall - Pink Floyd
Dookie - Green Day
Grace - Jeff Buckley
American Idiot - Green Day
American IV: The Man Comes Around - Johnny Cash
Nevermind - Nirvana
Siren Song of The Counter Culture - Rise Against
The Sufferer And The Witness - Rise Against
Leave A Whisper - Shinedown
Come What(ever) May - Stone Sour
Superunknown - Soundgarden
In Utero - Nirvana
Dark Side Of The Moon - Pink Floyd
Appetite For Destruction - Guns N Roses
Highway To Hell - AC/DC
Bon Iver - Bon Iver
Hello Hurricane - Switchfoot
Ten - Pearl Jam

Agalloch - Ashes Against the Grain
Agalloch - Marrow of the Spirit
Alcest - Souvenirs d'un autre Monde
Dry The River - Shallow Bed
In Flames - The Jester Race
Opeth - Blackwater Park
Sigur Ros - Takk...
Agalloch - Pale Folklore
Agalloch - The Mantle
Alcest - Ecailles De Lune
Alcest - L'es Voyages De Lame
Jeff Buckley - Grace
Two Gallants - The Throes
Biffy Clyro - Vertigo of Bliss
Biffy Clyro - Puzzle
Goo Goo Dolls - Superstar Carwash
Goo Goo Dolls - A Boy Named Goo
Anathema - Judgement
Midlake - The Courage of Others
Opeth - Morningrise

Almost half of this list could probably be replaced with other albums that I either can't think of or just missed the cut. In about 6 months time this list would probably contain A LOT more folk music, but since I only got properly into the genre a few months ago it's too soon to say any of the albums are my favourite of all time, apart from DTR obvz. Most of these other albums have stood the test of time well with me. Can still listen to em and enjoy them as much as the first time I heard them. And look at all that glorious Agalloch and Alcest on there. I'm such a fanboy.

My list would change from day to day; this is a quirky mix of current favorites and ones I associate with certain periods of my life or friends. Lots of bands where I like a few songs off multiple albums but wouldn't put one of their albums on the list.

Alice in Chains – Dirt
Alter Bridge – Blackbird
Alter Bridge - AB III
Fiona Apple – Tidal
Audioslave - Audioslave
Big Wreck - Albatross
Big Wreck - In Loving Memory Of
Jeff Buckley - Grace
Chris Cornell - Euphoria Morning
Depeche Mode – Violator
Ani DiFranco - Dilate
IAMX – The Alternative
Marilyn Manson – Mechanical Animals
Neko Case – Blacklisted
Nine Inch Nails - Head Like a Hole
R.E.M. – Automatic for the People
R.E.M. – Life’s Rich Pageant
Soundgarden - Superunknown
Soundgarden - Down on the Upside
Soundgarden - King Animal
Alterations: Dec 2010, May 2011, August 2011x2, Sept 2011, Oct 2014x2

In no order:

Tom Waits - Blue Valentine
Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works 85-92
Alice in Chains - Jar of Flies
Porcupine Tree - Fear of a Blank Planet
Mad Season - Above
Radiohead - In Rainbows
The Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream
Tool - Lateralus
Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats - Blood Lust
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
Beautiful Creatures - Beautiful Creatures
Orphaned Land - Mabool: The Story of the Three Sons of Seven
Soundgarden - Superunknown
Temple of the Dog - Temple of the Dog
DJ Shadow - Endtroducing.....
Boards of Canada - Music Has the Right to Children
Brand New - The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me
Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden
Led Zeppelin - Houses of the Holy
Project 86 - Drawing Black Lines

That was really hard, there's so many great albums that missed the cut. Ask me tomorrow, and half of this list would probably be different.

Edit: I eliminated Alter Bridge and Creed from my list to make it more interesting.

Part of being comical is to make people think you're serious..

Having said that...I nominate 'N Sync Greatest Hits

Alter Bridge - Blackbird
Alter Bridge - AB III
Alter Bridge - One Day Remains
Dream Theater - Train Of Thought

Dream Theater - Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence
Seventh Wonder - The Great Escape
Seventh Wonder - Mercy Falls
Symphony X - The Odyssey
Symphony X - V
Avenged Sevenfold - City Of Evil
Avenged Sevenfold - Waking The Fallen

Audioslave - Out Of Exile
Slipknot - Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses
Stone Sour - House Of Gold And Bones Part 1
Metallica - Death Magnetic
Creed - Weathered
Creed - Human Clay
Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory

As you can tell from my list, my favourite albums are so diverse.

Those are probably my top 20 albums, limited to a few per band, some of them included more because they were my favourite at one time or were very influential in getting me into music (e.g. Hybrid Theory, Human Clay) rather than because they're the ones I like to listen to most just now.

Don't think this is a big enough sample size to make too interesting a poll though, and I can't see much else other than Alter Bridge having a chance since it's the only thing most people will have in common.

I added old allegiances myself. I can't remember the last time I listened to Natural Selection, Human Clay, City of Evil, Ride the Lightning or All That You Can't Leave Behind, haha.

Agreed. I think for the sake of this being interesting AB and AB-related projects can be listed but shouldn't qualify.

Pearl Jam - Ten
Pearl Jam - Vs
Soundgarden - Badmotorfinger
Soundgarden - Superunknown
Alice In Chains - Dirt
Jeff Buckley - Grace
Chris Cornell - Euphoria Morning
Megadeth - Peace Sells... But Who's Buying?
Megadeth - Rust In Peace
Aerosmith - Rocks
Porcupine Tree - Fear of a Blank Planet
Dream Theater - Awake
Temple of The Dog - Temple of The Dog
Dream Theater - Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence

I only got to 14 or so albums, I like all the albums I listen to (otherwise I wouldn't listen to them), but I don't want to be so quick to say that other albums are the best albums of all time. The albums that I've listed are albums that I can return to any day, no matter what time it is, what I'm doing, or my mood, and I'll enjoy listening to it.

This is interesting, I'm eager to see how this turns out. That being said, I'm going to wait until I'm home to post my picks, just to try to eliminate the possibility of me missing anything from my collection that I can't think of off of the top of my head.
