^ That album has grown on me a ton since my first listen. I'm really glad I gave it some time.

John Grant - Pale Green Ghosts 6/10

First time listening to this album, found about the title track 'Pale Green Ghosts' randomly and decided to check this album out. It is very personal for this guy and I like his lyrics, they're so clever. As far as the music goes, I'm not all that crazy about synth rock, but it is a good record.

Highlights: GMF, Pale Green Ghosts, Black Belt and Vietnam.

I really like Grant. As you mentioned, his lyrics are incredibly good (and amusing) and songs like Pale Green Ghosts and Black Belt easily make up for the weak parts of the album.

My ratings for this week:

Image

7,5/10

I'm not a huge Biffy fan so it may not excite me this much.. Nevertheless these guys are very good live and so is the album. Also, not many people noticed this cd when it came out... Including myself :headscratch

Image

8/10

You convinced me to check these guys and I have to join the appreciation club! Oh, and I absolutely love 'I Owe You Nothing' (so this is an appreciation post!)

DISPERSE - LIVING MIRRORS
8/10

Awesome progressive rock/metal/jazz album. I'm not really into the genre but I loved it. These guys are very young but already so mature! If you like Animals As Leaders, Periphery - you may like this. Here's the pretty slow opening of the album: Dancing with endless love
FYI I'm a woman.

^ Yup, I agree with you on Grant.

Also... Glad you liked Biffy's 'Opposites' man, it's my favorite Biffy album!

As for the Dayshell... You're welcome, man. I'm glad you like 'em, they're a good band, I'm glad I discovered them and liked them so much!

Volbeat - Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies 8.5/10

Real good, hard rockin' stuff! :D

First time listening to this band and this album, actually.
The guy's voice sounds like a mixture of Eddie Vedder/Scott Stapp. But the music is on a whole 'nother level. This album has been a journey, it's very dynamic and atmospheric.

Highlights: 'Pearl Hart', 'The Nameless One', 'Cape Of Our Hero', 'Lola Montez', 'Lonesome Rider' & 'Black Bart'

Actually I think he sounds more like James Hetfield at times, not Stapp.
I really like this band - would love to see them live someday, they really kick ass :)

He does sound quite a bit like Het. It probably the growl/yodel thing that they both do.

Breaking Benjamin - Phobia 10/10

I used to be a huge Breaking Benjamin fan. They were my first "Alter Bridge" so that rating might be a bit skewed, but nonetheless, Phobia is an awesome, solid hard rock album.

Highlights: Breath, Diary of Jane, Had Enough

Breaking Benjamin - Dear Agony 10/10

Similar to my Phobia review, this rating is also a bit bias but there's not a single track I think is weak. I love the guitar tones and riffs on this album.

Highlights: Into the Nothing, Without You, Lights Out, Fade Away

Phobia :) I loved this album in my time as well... I would also add 'Dance With The Devil' to my favourites.

LINCOLN DURHAM - Exodus of the Deemed Unrighteous (9/10)

I know blues may not be exactly what interestst most of you guys, but this is an excellent album. This is like Sweeney Todd playing blues. Like folk, southern rock and blues mixed by Tim Burton.

I put my bias aside and gave Shinedown's Amaryllis a fair listen. For all of the crap that we give them for their live shows these days, it's a pretty good album. No, it doesn't rock like the first two records. But it's got some good song writing. I caught myself singing along to Miracle, I'll Follow You, Nowhere Kids and several others. Not a bad album. But definately not their best.
