Bump Of Chicken's Butterflies album.

So, I found this Japanese band while I was reading a manga and one of the main characters of the series name dropped this band as his choice when he was going to sing karaoke. Checked out a few songs. They have a good chill folky vibe. I get that feeling that their songs could be used frequently in certain slice-of-life dramas in animes and the likes, so I decided to search Youtube to see if the songs of their latest album is there since I am not getting any luck on Spotify.

Another cool thing about this band is that these guys have been together for 25 years in the same line-up since the 9th grade and was able to have a successful stadium tour in Japan in 2016. That's awesome.

This was one of the singles released a month or so ago. Listening to it again and again now that the album's out and the opening guitar riff reminds me of something...Anyone else hear it?

Wouldn't surprise me if there was bit of influence. QR's singer Todd La Torre and Myles are huge fans of each other. Two gorgeous songs at work here.

In Flames' I, The Mask album. The 5th album released in 2019 that I have listened to. So over the last few weeks, I've been listening to In Flames and here's my thoughts. Musically, they are all right, but as I listen through their albums in the 90s I just can't find any of their stuff that peaks my interest. Death Growls and Unclean Vocals aren't really a style of singing that I enjoy or can keep my attention (although, if you mix it a bit with some solid clean vocals and make it seamless and make the harsh vocals mean something, I can get into the style. Matt Heafy of Trivium does a great job of that).

It's also weird that I find that their vocalist adapted more of a Jonathan Davis-sort of vibe in the 00s albums. It's not really a surprise that I find myself getting into their 10s album a little more than their previous works and surprise, surprise, it's the ones that the long-time fans don't really care much for. Also, I think they have a Chevelle (another band, I need to listen to their albums in full since I'm seeing them with Breaking Benjamin in September) vibe sometimes. Don't know why I think that.

Oh well, I heard some of their singles of the new album on Octane. Let's see how this goes.

Edit: Finally done with listening to In Flames. Time to listen to Within Temptation. Thankfully, I don't have to listen to as many albums. Only 7 albums. Which is good, since I need all the time I can get to listening to all 14 (plus A Change of Seasons) Dream Theater albums. Two big concerts within a three day span and three in a two week span. All in the Wiltern Theater (same place AB has been playing the last few tours and it's a solid looking venue). I'm pumped.

Within Temptation's Enter album and The Dance EP (Spotify has them all as one album).

Finally made it to the new Within Temptation album.

Within Temptation' Resist album. The 6th album released in 2019 that I have listened to. I only heard one track from the album, The Reckoning, and it features Jacoby Shaddix of Papa Roach and honestly, even though it may be on the blandish side, this collaboration works better than one would think. The lyrics wouldn't be too much out of place from a Papa Roach song, I think. Let's see how the rest goes.

All right, I'm finally done with listening to the Within Temptation catalog. Overall, they have a solid catalog. I felt like they hit a good peak with The Heart of Everything and The Unforgiving, and Hydra and Resist were not as great as those, but there were still some solid songs.

On another note, I started listening to Smash into Pieces which is the first opening band before In Flames and Within Temptation. These guys sound like they would be mainstays on Sirius XM Octane and would be best on a bill with Breaking Benjamin, Shinedown, Nickelback, etc. So having a band that fits an Active Rock mold may not go well with a crowd that leans towards more heavier stuff that In Flames and Within Temptation can bring. That stated, for a guy that loves that sort of modern radio-friendly hard rock, at times, and Sirius XM Octane, I found these guys to be a lot easier to get into blind than In Flames. They had a couple of ok/good albums, but they went ahead and pulled a Shinedown in their last album. Oh well.

Now then, it's time to listening to all 14 Dream Theater albums, in a five day span. I definitely want to focus on these two main albums since this is the bulk of the show. Scenes From A Memory (which they are celebrating 20 years of) and Distance Over Time (their newest album which seems to have the best reception since Mike Mangini joined the band or since the A Dramatic Turn of Events album), but let's go back all the way from the start. I have to admit this is a really long journey. 14 albums, at least two of those albums are double albums with a couple others going the distance and filling the single disc (75 minutes).

Dream Theater's When Day and Dream Unite album followed by their big breakthrough, Images and Words.

Edit: So, I'm at the Scenes From A Memory album and I am way enjoying this album than I did around 5 years ago when I first started listening to Dream Theater. I still prefer Awake, over Scenes from A Memory and "Images and Words," as their best album, but Scenes from a Memory is holding up nicely which is good news since they are playing this in its entirety on Thursday and I would really hate it if I did not like this album and then not enjoy the show because of it.

All right, I put this off long enough, but now it's go time and because the concert is tomorrow and it will feature a fair amount of songs from this album, so here we go.

Dream Theater's Distance Over Time album. The 7th album released in 2019 that I have listened to. As a guy that digs The Astonishing (more for the concept and the willingness to do something bold like do a 2+ hour album and have it be more in the veins of a Broadway play or something similar. There are some really solid songs as well), I was intrigued on what they can do with the next album.

Sure, with the bonus track included, the runtime is only one hour which might as well be less than 40 minutes in comparison to how long a typical Dream Theater album runs for. That stated, I've been reading that this feels more like a collaborative effort in the songwriting front from all five guys, as oppose to the John Petrucci and Jordan Rudess show, so that's a big win in my book. Let's see if it works out for them.

---- Masters of War by Bob Dylan

-------My gf and i went to the shinedown/papa roach/ asking alexandria concert recently. Papa Roach put on a good show. This was my third time seeing Shinedown but they played it too safe. 3 lip synched choruses of Second Chance is just so boring. If ur gonna lip sinch at least, play one chorus live and mix up the melody if the notes are too high. Same with Diamond Eyes. Like, Shinedown just played it too safe and predictable. Devil was good live tho.

Ice Nine Kills - Rocking The Boat

So I've been hearing this band from time to time on Octane and they released their new album last year and all of their songs on that album gives nods to famous horror films. This particular song, Rocking The Boat, gives nods to Jaws. I like this song mainly for this line.
"Yeah, coast guard this is the orca again, we need you out here now. The boat is under attack. It's a great white, over.
Roger that, ETA fifteen minutes, over
In fifteen minutes we'll be f***ing shark bait"

I enjoyed the Nothing More show when they came to LA. They brought a killer live set the whole way and the crowd was really rowdy for most of the show. Plenty of pits and crowd-surfers and lots of pushing. I just wished they got more playing time than the 80-85 minutes they played, since I couldn't care much for the three opening acts.

Within Temptation is my favorite show of the year so far though (and one of four concerts that I deemed, the perfect concert to me). The only thing I wished happened was they cut first band's opening set (which lasted 35 minutes) and add it to Within Temptation and In Flames set since those were the two bands people really wanted to see. Nothing wrong with Smash Into Pieces' set. People liked them enough as a polite curio, but they were not a huge dealbreaker at all. Plus, their frontman was weird and I think he might have either mimed and sang with a backing track, which makes it hard to figure out which part of his voice is live or not, similar to those criticisms that Brent Smith of Shinedown has live from time to time.

On that note, let's see if the Switchfoot concert next week can join that list of perfect concerts. It's a good chance of it though. The opening bands' catalog sounds very indie rock and calming, like Switchfoot. I just need a good view the whole time and I should be golden. Going to listen to Switchfoot's whole catalog. I'm quite shocked on how many albums they had released before they released The Beautiful Letdown.

Switchfoot's The Legend of Chin album.

Singers still hate Denver

It was so fucking good. I haven't had that much fun at a concert in a long long time. Dudes put on an incredible live show. Loved all the contraptions and effects. Jonny is fit. Spent the whole show in the mosh, though the camera in this video never panned a few degrees left during the song to see us. Would love to find a clip that shows some old guy in an AB III tour shirt slamming away with the kids. #StreetCred
