It's a catch 22 in the music industry. Drift too far from your core sound and people throw a fit. Stay too close to your core sound for too long and people tend to get bored.

The key, I think, is to experiment with sounds without trying to emulate them. Alter Bridge did this very well on Fortress. Subtle with occasionally something really out there, like the intro of Calm the Fire.

Owl City - Up All Night
I don't say this quite often as I used to, but I feel Owl City has been that sort of music that has really help me cope with how life has been developing and forming for me nowadays. Pretty calming music to listen to and pass the time.
