The Star Wars Thread (EPISODE IX SPOILERS Inside)
Re: The Star Wars Thread (The Last Jedi Teasers Inside)
I heard someone where I work kinda complain that they thought Luke seemed too scared compared to the guy in the OT who took on Vader. I think that's kind of the point though. I think it's a fear of knowing the full depth of what he faces now. Obi-Wan went through a similar change in his older years after Anikan'a fall, so I think it's pretty natural for Luke to be more cautious now compared to his youth.

Yeah, in the originals he only really had himself to look out for, whereas in this he had a ton of people under his care murdered. Gonna change a guy.
The 'only seen this once before thing' - can't decide if that implies he hasn't seen her before in his life, or whether the 'once before' was her as well. GIMME STAR WARS DAMMIT.

I assumed he was saying he had only seen one other person with such raw power once before in his life - Ben Solo. That's why he's so afraid, knowing what Rey has the potential to become.Ubik wrote:The 'only seen this once before thing' - can't decide if that implies he hasn't seen her before in his life, or whether the 'once before' was her as well.
Some people online have wondered if he's referring to either Vader or Sidious (because as a youth he faced them fearlessly), but I'd bet he meant Ben Solo.

Yeah that's what I'd figured too, but that would imply he's never seen Rey before. Which throws my assumptions into chaos!Andy92 wrote: I assumed he was saying he had only seen one other person with such raw power once before in his life - Ben Solo. Still not digging Snoke in look or voice. Gold gown doesn't help. Nor does being called Snoke.

Re: The Star Wars Thread (The Last Jedi Teasers Inside)
There was a George Lucas interview around the time before The Force Awakens came out where someone asked him if he had given anyone at Disney creative input for what to do with the new films. He said he started to but the new owners ultimately disagreed with his belief that Star Wars had to fundamentally be "about the Skywalkers." Reading between the lines always made me believe that Disney was going to gradually start transitioning new force users into the story, which might rule out the whole "Rey is a Skywalker" theory. Because we already have Kylo Ren being from the family.Ubik wrote:Yeah that's what I'd figured too, but that would imply he's never seen Rey before. Which throws my assumptions into chaos!

Man last time they wanted us to think Rey was teaming up with Kylo. Now they want us to believe she's murdering Luke. I bet none of these clips represent the movie at all lol.Ubik wrote:Andy. ANDY WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?!

I'm a huge original Star Wars fan. But TFA just fell flat to me, so I'm not going gaga over this.
I honestly enjoyed R1 quite a bit more.

One week left. This isn't gonna go the way you think!
Though if she turns out to be some Snoke plant I will be disappoint.

Re: The Star Wars Thread (The Last Jedi Teasers Inside)
I don't really see it happening. There isn't really anything in TFA that foreshadows anything close to her being a plant.Ubik wrote:Though if she turns out to be some Snoke plant I will be disappoint.
Put it this way, if they go that route, it wasn't good story building.

Agreed, was just thinking in terms of the trailers being taken literally, "fulfil your destiny" and whatnot.Andy92 wrote:I don't really see it happening. There isn't really anything in TFA that foreshadows anything close to her being a plant.

Re: The Star Wars Thread (The Last Jedi Teasers Inside)
I think the trailers are setup this way deliberately for that very reason. I think they believe it's a good idea to build that hype of Rey potentially going to the dark side. But my guess is that what ends up happening is this movie digs into the light/dark not being quite as black and white as the series has been in the past. Reminds me of the Gray Jedi Order from some of the novels.Ubik wrote:Agreed, was just thinking in terms of the trailers being taken literally, "fulfil your destiny" and whatnot.Andy92 wrote:I don't really see it happening. I'll hold off on my opinions (other than the above) until you lot across the pond have seen it. There's a lot to process!

Re: The Star Wars Thread (The Last Jedi SPOILERS Inside)
It's interesting and appropriate (given how the Last Hero was received on here) that it seems to be very divisive among fans so far, in contrast to the near unanimous praise it got from reviewers. It has some stuff in it that I didn't care for at all (basically that casino scene in the middle and ensuing escape on the animal, the Leia in space scene and some of the general setup around the Resistance's situation), as well as some of the best Star Wars stuff I've seen on screen (basically all the Luke, Rey and Kylo Ren stuff, as well as the incredible sequence of the Star Destroyer being shredded in hyperspace).
But I've seen some people saying it was worse than the prequels, ruins Luke Skywalker's character, massively Disneyfied etc which I can't agree with at all. I think the highs, particularly the shift in gear after the midpoint and beyond, make it a big success for me, even if it doesn't consistently hit those highs and occasionally drops the ball (seriously, that animal ride...). It was bold in a way that TFA shied away from, took the story in unexpected directions and sets us up for a potentially highly epic episode 9, which, unlike the first two, now has a very realistic chance of being better than its original series counterpart.
