Ubik made a lot of good points but I really opened this thread up to spoilers so I could talk about the Porgs.

Basic review: This film turned a non-Star Wars fan into a Star Wars fan. While I wasn’t super into these movies in the past, I was fully aware and knowledgeable of all the characters and storylines going in. I have seen all of the movies at one point or another, some multiple times, but this was the first in the whole franchise I was in love with immediately. Haven’t been the biggest fan over the years, but there were a couple of scenes/moments that had me cheering, clapping, and grinning from ear to ear.

Now to address some spoilers:

While I loved this movie and was thoroughly entertained overall, it was not flawless. There were definitely pros and cons, but the highs were so astronomically high.

The Finn and Rose side-mission storyline, as well as everything that came along with the mission, felt completely out of place, I viewed it as a way to add length to the movie. In the end, the story paid off and did have a point to it, but I felt like it was lackluster and overall could have been scrapped altogether.

Leia’s “Mary Poppins” moment was cringeworthy in my opinion, made me as well as a large majority of the audience laugh and not in a good way. I thought it came off very cheesy and ridiculous.

Those were my two major gripes with the film and things I can agree with people who dislike or hate the movie. All this other stuff I’m reading and hearing in reviews is so hard to agree with, just comes off as sour grapes and holding the film to unreachable expectations that Star Wars fans seem to have. This movie is phenomenal and I had an amazing time watching it with a packed theater at the first preview screening. It was quite an experience

Pre-release - "Pfft, this film will just be a Empire clone, I wish they'd try something different."
Post-release - "This film is not Star Wars!"

My favourite I've seen so far is "Star Wars is being ruined by feminism". It's a view...

Awesome that it had such an impression on you Hartie!

Eh, I see what you mean, but I didn't hate it. A lot of fans online hate things just for the sake of hating things. I need to watch this new one a few times to solidify where I rank it, but my gut feeling is that I liked The Force Awakens more. I just don't see how people are going all out with comments like "movie sucks, worst one ever."

Watched it two hours ago. Never been a SW fan, I've seen all the movies but never really got into it so I'd describe myself as pretty neutral but maybe I'm not because this time I lost my patience. I find it so repetitive! How many times can you tell a story of an old master who has made some mistakes and a youngster whose soul is a battlefield? Can't they really come up with anything new in this series?.. What a waste of a great universe.
There were a couple of moments the audience laughed but in my opinion at least one of that moments was completely out of place (just before Luke's (or his hologram) fight with Ben, Luke was being shot at from whatever guns they had which did no harm to him - and then he shook dust off his shoulder and people laughed - it wasn't funny for me, there was some kind of a mismatch... And all that pompous, bombastic aura. Not for me, thank you, not this time.

Nevertheless, I am happy for all those who liked the movie :) It's always nice to get something new from the universe you love.

Still, since it was third movie in a row my husband took me to that I didn't like, I swore to him that I will take him to see Fifty Shades Something with me :lol

I have mixed feelings.

My thoughts are below.

---At first I didnt like Luke's character but i liked how he became more optimistic over the course of the movie.

They really needed a scene where Rey struggled with the dark side of the Force temptation. The earlier scene in the first half of the movie was good, where she struggled with that dark side force black pit but then it was never brought up again. Tension, but no resolvement of that thread.

They really really needed a scene where she struggled with the dark side and overcame it, like during the time after they killed Snoke, who had an anticlimatic death btw.

First half of the movie i think was better than the second half. First half opened up a lot of threads, 2nd half resolved some threads but not all. And those threads definitely could have been resolved better.

The 1st half scenes with Luke and Rey I liked. I didnt care for the side plots.

Is it better than TFA? Idk. Still better than the prequels tho.

Some risks this movie took were good but others didnt pan out well, I thought.

If you have mixed feelings, I would definetly recommend watching the movie a second time.

The more I've thought about this film, the more it's set in that Adam Driver's acting was ace. The internal struggle he shows on the screen makes him such a loose cannon of a villain. He reminds me of a young Anakin, but his acting is absolutely on point.

For all the...somewhat questionable things Rian Johnson decided to do with this film, he got his villain right.

Snoke looks just like a guy in our little town. I'm not even kidding. Except for the scar. Me and my wife looked at each other and laughed about it in the chamber scene.

I loved the score that was played during the Finn vs. Phasma fight. Looked up the soundtrack to see the song was called "Chrome Dome." :lol

I've heard some fans were angry about that term :lol I think I've gone a bit darkside, because I've found that the more some people rage about the film the more I love it. I've taken to listening to angry youtube reviews just so I can listen to how bad their reasoning is to call it the worst Star Wars film, that's ruined their childhood.

Haha I went back to see it again today with one of my friends, and I think it holds up as a really solid film. Once you realize it's a slow builder that has two big climaxes at the end, it tends to sit better (because you aren't constantly expecting things to happen every 3 seconds of the film).

I was paying a lot of attention to the score this time around, and John Williams knocked it out of the park again. I just wanted to mention the Chrome Dome song title because I loved it so much lol.

I'll preface this saying I'm glad you enjoyed it. For me that was Rogue One last year and falling in love with a new SW film is awesome. For what it's worth though, Mark Hamill didn't like Luke's role in TFA and even less in TLJ saying that it's not his Luke, Luke wouldn't do these sorts of things, etc. Personally I think that's pretty telling.

Spoilers below

For me, I enjoyed 2 things about this movie; well, I didn't particularly enjoy the way they did anything in this movie apart from the SFX scene of the hyperspace kamikaze, but I liked that they had Luke trash talk the Jedi legacy since I had a discussion on how for such a wise guy Yoda constantly seemed to mess everything up the whole series. The other thing I liked was that they tried to have Kylo reject both the Jedi and the Sith in favor of either nihilism or just wanting it all to stop. I get that Rian was trying to push expectations out the window and the series out of its comfort zone but I think he royally screwed up the execution of just about every part of this movie:

- Too much Marvelesque humor. Just because you CAN do something for a laugh doesn't mean you SHOULD, especially if its frequency and tone didn't match the characters or the atmosphere of the universe. They made Hux out to be a moron just for a laugh completely undermining him as a threat. In 9 all we'll see from him are continued leadership goofs or he will take over as the Big Bad if Kylo has a change of heart. Neither option resonates for me.
- Snoke and Phasma are both wasted opportunities. I've heard people say that we knew nothing about the Emperor going into Ep 6 which is a fair criticism, but with that, he was the big bad tugging Vader's leash and we didn't really need more than that. It was just the notion that he was the top of the pyramid, was stronger than Vader and when you took him out the galaxy was saved. Since this is a continuation of that storyline though, people want to know who the hell Snoke is and where he came from 30 years after the re-establishment of the Republic and how he formed / came to control the First Order / turned Kylo. Phasma on the other hand got punked in both films and as much as they should just keep her dead at this point, I'm guessing we'll see her again for a third time which will force the same outcome. There's no stakes if we see her again, and if we don't it's a wasted subplot. Lose / lose. For Snoke, they nerfed any impact he might have had on 9. I really don't know what the plot options for the next film are outside of Rey vs Kylo or everyone vs Hux.
- This film continuously undoes all its own setups. From Luke deciding to burn the Jedi history and wisdom yet being distraught when that very thing was happening, to Finn and Rose going to find the codebreaker, failing, yet finding one anyway, this film just constantly undermines its own plot points and character arcs. Against Luke's council, Rey goes into the Dark Side lair of the island and learns...absolutely nothing. Rey shows up to recruit Luke, doesn't. Rey asks for Luke to come back with her, doesn't, dies anyway. Rey needs Luke to train her, doesn't, trains herself. Poe is demoted, no impact, mutinies, makes no enemies in the process (and saves nobody lol). Luke wants to kill Kylo for a second, doesn't, creates monster anyway. This one is particularly stupid considering the guy risked everything believing he could save Vader, probably the worst guy and biggest catalyst for death in the galaxy at the time, for no other reason than he was family. Leia dies, doesn't, Peter Pans through space (didn't necessarily have an issue with her having powers but the way they executed that...holy crap). Codebreaker succeeds, they get caught, betrays them anyway, entire casino mission worthless for the second time. There's at least a dozen more of these I can't think of off the top of my head. For fucks sake, even Chewie kills and roasts a Porg and can't even eat it.
- Subplots dropped. So I don't know how much of this is JJ setting up mystery really well without having any idea where it would go, then passing the baton to Rian like he did with Lost and how much was intended but they dropped the ball on why Kylo killed Han, why Kylo was associating so much with Vader then throws it to the wind after his master mocks him for it, who was Snoke and how was he influencing Kylo while at Luke's academy, what that whole map MacGuffin was for in TFA if Luke just wanted to be left alone, why Rey was so OP either due to her parents or history, why the lightsaber called to her, Knights of Ren, Max von Sydow, C-3PO's red arm or literally anything more about Phasma and it doesn't look like we'll get answers to any of this.
- Trashing space battles in general. Everything about the strategy of the space battles or the idea of having a chase take up the entire film was bad. The First Order shows up with this magical new technology we're repeatedly told is impossible and is there to destroy the Rebel Fleet once and for all. So it makes sense for this type of mission that they would only bring Star Destroyers and larger vessels completely incapable of chasing the fleet they want to hunt? How about the concept of one bomber taking out an entire dreadnaught that has no shields for some reason or the idea that the smaller transports going to the planet can't be seen by an entire fleet of sensors? Then as cool as the hyperspace suicide was, that just opens up a can of worms like why didn't one of the earlier ships do that? Or why didn't anyone do that to the Death Star(s)? Kinda nitpicky but they made it such a large part of the film.

The list goes on to the ridiculousness from the casino planet, introducing Vice Admiral gender studies then killing her off instead of using Admiral Ackbar who fucking dies anyway, Rose and Finn romance, Rose's ridiculous speech after preventing Finn from SAVING PEOPLE. the pokemon that made it into the film, Rey being even more OP, etc.

For Ep 9 I really don't know what they're going to do. The entirety of the rebellion now fits in the Falcon and they backed the wrong pony by letting Leia live, now they have to decide to kill her off or CGI her likeness in. I'm guessing they're going to undo the "nobody responded to our SOS, they've lost hope" plot point and spend the majority of the next film gathering allies Mass Effect style. All I know is I'm am completely uninterested and have no hype for 9. Really wasn't a fan of TFA but I just felt so let down by this one and it's not even because of Luke dying or the porgs, definitely the worst one by miles for me which sucks because word is that Rian Johnson is making his own trilogy with all new characters.

I don't really have anything to add that FT didn't just say right above. I watched it today with anticipation and interest in the stories and relationships and plots/subplots and character progressions, and found myself totally frustrated by how forced and ridiculous it all was. They can build mammoth spaceships that travel at light speed across galaxies but the are going to drag that cannon across the salt flat at 0.3 mph. The most evil force in the universe supposedly driving this whole conflict, bzzt, bisected, gone. The para above about undoing its own setups says it all. I mean, I hated the stupid Ewoks, but at least they took part in a battle, as unbelievable as their efforts were. But the porgs...just, why?

Having said that, it is Star Wars, so at a certain level, so what if the characters make stupid decisions and the story tellers write themselves into inescapable corners and characters die only to ridiculously not die and and the main story line of the first two trilogies unsurprisingly repeats itself once again in the third. That hyperspace jump through the star destroyer was so beautiful that I quit trying to make anything more of the movie and just enjoyed it for what it was worth. I'd love for the series to all come together in some deep complicated but fitting way how Game of thrones - almost - does, but Star Wars lost that long ago, pretty much by Return of the Jedi. For E9, I'll just expect a superficially entertaining episode from an iconic series, but nothing more from it, and I'll enjoy it a lot more the whole way through.
Another photobucket casualty... :(

To be fair to Rian Johnson, I feel like JJ Abrams tied his hands with this series by introducing The Emporer 2.0 into the series in the first place. Rian envisioned Kylo Ren as the lead villain (which I agree is the right choice, anything beyond that is just repeating things we've already seen).

Funny you mentioned the slow charging battle cannon, Greg, because for a sci-fi movie I thought a lot of the battle scenes in this one had more of a classic war film theme going on? The old, slow bombers in the opening sequence, the kamikaze pilot, the trench warfare, etc.

I've read online that Rian wrote the script for this movie during the filming of The Force Awakens. So it's not like he used fan reactions to Episode 7 to gauge what he should do with Snoke, Rey's parents, etc. All good story tellers will tell you that the characters tend to write themselves. I honestly think Rian wrote a story that he saw as a natural progression of those characters.

Luke's storyline is obviously getting the biggest critique overall, but I personally don't hate what Rian did with his character. If you look at the original films objectively, Luke was over ambitious time and time again. Without the help of Han, Leia, and ultimately Vader, he set himself up to die a handful of times. He abandoned his training with Yoda early, and while yes, Luke did get through to Anakin, he was in no way a match for the Emporer. It wasn't even close.

So what becomes of a character like Luke as he gets older? What happens when that same ambition that drove you forward as a youth continues to drive you forward as you're older, but this time there isn't anyone around to fall back on when you overreach? I loved Yoda's appearance in this film because Yoda had one last thing to teach Luke. Because guess what? Luke never actually finished his training with Yoda all those years ago.

Luke has an amazing arc in this film. I do have gripes about things that happened with the Resistance, but I don't have a gripe with how Luke's character was handled. His final moments displayed one of the most powerful uses of the Force ever seen in a Star Wars film. And just as Leia's projection sparked a rebellion all those years ago...Luke's projection is going to spark a new resistance now.
