Books/What are you reading?
Re: Books/What are you reading?
Yeah that's probably not his best work. Again, only from what I've heard though. I only know Sanderson through Wheel of Time (cause he finished the series after Jordan died) and there's a lot that I didn't like about it, though he did a decent job. They say his action scenes are great and I agree, but his characters are too simplified sometimes.
Re: Books/What are you reading?
Lotha, read Mistborn in serbian. I've read both versions and our has a lot of mistakes fixed. I've read both as generally I like to read in original.
Not story wise of course Which is still pretty decent even the first book is full of cliches

Re: Books/What are you reading?
Probably I will at some point, thanks for the tip
Re: Books/What are you reading?
This is probably accurate. His action scenes in this book have been good so far. I'll have to see how well the characters develop once I finish the first book.Lotha wrote:They say his action scenes are great and I agree, but his characters are too simplified sometimes.

Finished the first Mistborn trilogy. Now a piece of the past few weeks of my life feels like it's missing.

Re: Books/What are you reading?
The stories he tells about scrounging by before he sold paperback rights to Carrie are must reads. The actual writing part is kind of boring. But the anecdotes are great.

Re: Books/What are you reading?
I really enjoy reading authors' perspectives on writing. It's impressive how much work they typically put into it. They're a lot like musicians in that regard. You don't necessarily realize they spend that many hours a day working on their craft.
I just read Theodore Rex by Edmund Morris. It's really well written and well researched, but I've never seen a biographer with a bigger and almost unprofessional man crush on his subject. Kinda detracted from the narrative a bit, but it's still a great work of history.

Just finished reading The Girl in the Glass by Jeffrey Ford. He used to be a professor at my school, so the college made it mandatory reading for my writing class. Starts off good, but gets way too cheesy and silly towards the end. 5/10.
Thanks Andy!

Re: terrible book too.
I had a professor write a book and then have us read it for his class. Literally everyone's interpretation was wrong. Worst idea ever.Micky wrote:Just finished reading The Girl in the Glass by Jeffrey Ford. He used to be a professor at my school, so the college made it mandatory reading for my writing class. I'm reading The Hero With A Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell. An interesting read so far.

Re: Books/What are you reading?
So far I've had a blast noticing some of the unintentional ancient myth-parts that I have in my stories.

What is the Joseph Campbell novel about? Might be interested.

Re: Books/What are you reading?
It's an analysis of the use of the hero concept in myth since the earliest civilisations, highlighting common elements that appear in each (virgin birth, death and resurrection etc). It was written in the 30s so some of the language can be a bit dated but it's a fascinating read, our very own Myles Kennedy is a fan in fact.

Re: Books/What are you reading?
I just found out Tad Williams wrote a sequel to his 'Memory, Sorrow and Thorn' series, which is still one of my favorite fantasy series ever. Not sure how I missed this, but woo!
