A Star Is Born
Fantastic. Bradley Cooper is very surprisingly good. Lady Gaga is simply incredible.

Thanks for the sig Don Harry!
Re: The Movie Thread
I saw it tonight, and I don’t wanna spoil it for anyone, but I thought it was really cool that the movie actually takes place on Halloween night. I mean that’s some top writing and I really didn’t expect that twist.AHart96 wrote:Seeing the new Halloween movie in less than an hour, SO excited

Re: The Movie Thread
I enjoyed it a lot. Many callbacks without being too up front with them

Just got tix to see Bohemian Rhapsody tomorrow. I'm usually pretty skeptical about movies like this because the story of Queen and Freddy is 3+ decades and counting and simply can't be done justice in 2 hours, and then Hollywood always has to sensationalize stuff unnecessarily (same goes for First Man) and make it even worse, but it is still Queen and I am curious to see how Rami Malek handles it.

Re: The Movie Thread
Just saw it today. Definitely a cliff notes version of the Freddy/Queen story and some historical changes were made to fit a movie formula, but I loved it. Rami Malek was unbelievable as Freddy, star-making performance in my opinion. The live concert scenes and studio scenes were amazing, especially Live Aid and the making of Bohemian Rhapsody. I got very emotional a few times in the last third of the movie. I think your enjoyment of this movie depends on what you’re hoping to get out of it, I’ve seen a fair bit of negative reaction from people who were hoping for a different story to be toldgbruin wrote:Just got tix to see Bohemian Rhapsody tomorrow. I'm with you, Hartie. I'm not sure what people were expecting that would give them a bad impression of the movie. I was very pleasantly surprised how they fit enough of the Queen/Freddy Mercury story into a movie. Sure, it's an inherently cursory look at Freddy and the band, but they did a very sincere and reasonable job with what a 2 hour movie allows. The big headline though was Rami Malek. He was freaking incredible. His performance justifies the entire project.

William Goldman died One of the greatest screenwriters of all time.
I've watched All the President's Men about 4 times in the last couple of years for noooo particular reason at all, 5th might be necessary.

All my family was out of town last weekend, so I spent the nights with Century Link's On Demand selection. Watched Mission Impossible: Fallout. Really fun and enjoyable. It's typically predictable for a franchise like that (do you really think Ethan is gonna get nuked?) but you just ignore that and go along for the ride.
Also watched Operation Finale. It's the story of how the Israeli intelligence service found and "extracted" former Nazi Adolf Eichmann to Israel for trial. It's pretty suspenseful, even if you know your history, and it's very very well acted and filmed. Ben Kingsley is amazing. Excellent movie.

I love the last few Mission Impossible films, they're big dumb action done right. Cruise is weird, but damn good in that role.

A Simple Favor, starring Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively, is freakin hilarious. Kendrick is so adorable and she is so good at those quirky outrageous naive comedy moments, and Lively is great as the hot, ultra, confident in-your-face bad ass. Their characters are great contrasts to each other and the movie is really fun.

Didn't love the movie because of other movies with similar motivations/intentions I have seen before it maybe kind of ruining the overall experience for me, but I understood what the director was going for and dug it for the most part.gbruin wrote:A Simple Favor, starring Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively, is freakin hilarious. Totally with you on Kendrick, though. I'm picking up what you put down, so much so that after seeing this movie I just had to make two GIFs, and they feel so totally necessary. You're welcome, by the way.

Boy Erased is a true story about a teenager who enters a gay conversion therapy program in the conservative South. It is not a very enjoyable movie, which is a key part of it's meaning and purpose. It is, however, a very admirable movie and a very important story. The idea that people believe that conversion therapy is a legitimate concept is archaic and ignorant and tragic, and Boy Erased demonstrates that very well.
