Tulsa State Fair 10/08/16

Post by One Drew Remains »

So I have decided 4 to 5 hours is my limit for any band that I love. When the US dates came out and I saw Tulsa (4 hours exactly, from my house) I decided we would go. The show was free to get into. But a local casino was selling $30.00 VIP seats, where we were barricaded off from the GA's. So I bought them after being told there were only 5 rows of them (turns out the were 28 rows of them).

So after a day at the fair (bigger than our Missouri State Fair, I must add) I headed over to the stage about 4. The VIP seats were first come first served and 4 hours before the show, I was already #7 in line. The boys came out for soundcheck at 4:30. I falsetto'd "STAND UP AND SHOOUUUT" at Myles who gave me the horns. They did a quick line check of Brand New Start (only 3 lines of vox from Myles which he should have been practicing... more on that in a minute).

I hung out with some really cool people waiting to get in, some 20 somethings who kept asking me what an AB show was like (this was my 4th) and some older people behind me. My son, wife and daughter joined me about 6. And we ended up getting on the rail right between Mark's monitors. I'll update this with pics once I get them uploaded.

No opening band. AB's intro track "Paddi" from the Blackbird tour opens up as they tear into Come To Life. My son won a huge stuffed jamaican banana at a game, and was shaking it at the band to the groove of the tune. I noticed Myles smile at it a couple of times. I was ready for Farther Than The Sun, as I never got to hear it on the Fortress tour (I did get Bleed it Dry on the first of two shows that tour, so I can't complain) but they went into BTC instead. I think it was after Addicted To Pin that I felt something hit me in the chest (I rock out and sing pretty hard, so I didn't see it) and it was one of Brian's bass picks.

Myles welcomed us and said they didn't know what to expect from a state fair show in Tulsa, but they loved our energy. Ghost, Achilles, and the Brand New Start. During one of the slower parts, Mark waved at my 8 year old daughter, who's blue eyes barely could peak over the rail. A couple of songs later, he handed me a pick to give her.

Then later in the night he threw my 11 year old son (who's in my av) a pick and asked him if he caught it. When he said yes, Mark gave him a thumbs up. He also did something I have never seen anyone do. A teenager brought his Tremonti PRS and told me he was going to try and get Mark to play it. I said "cool" and then rolled my eyes at my wife as I thought it would never happen. During Ties that Bind, he had it out, and Mark noticed it, and grabbed it. He said "this guy just gave me his guitar... thanks man." And then he took it to his tech. He came out with it strapped on shortly after and he played Blackbird... YES, BLACKBIRD on it. It didn't sound as good as One of Mark's high dollar models, but it was still good. He then signed it and handed it back to the kid. Reaffirming why I love this band.

Myles old a story during WOY about how state fairs smell like poop, and how that was a good thing. He then went into the story about cleaning horse stalls in Spokane for $1 a stall for his first guitar (child labor, he called it).

They didn't play OYE as the closer. Instead they ended the main set with Metalingus. Which was a cool way to end it even if we did get shorted a couple of songs. Myles fist bumped the entire front row, including yours truly and my two kids (my wife was holding my daughter up, so she got left out). She actually got a picture of Myles fist bumping me, which I may need to turn into a sig or something.

They came back with SMaL, and a guitar duel. I was close enough I could hear Mark ask Myles if he wanted to do it, and he nodded yes. Myles really freakin shredded it up. They ended with Rise Today. At the end of the show, I stuck around and got Mark's setlist. I thought I was cool shit, and then a roadie paper aiplaned Mark's guitar tech's (not Ernie this tour) setlist at my son. So yeah, after striking out at my last two shows, I got two setlists at this one. Made out like bandits, we did.

Not sure if it was my favorite AB show I have ever been to, but it's definitely top 2. We had SO much fun. The boys had fun, and we had plenty of interaction going on. The crowd was great (I think the last time they played Tulsa was on the CoM in 2011) and no one got too drunk, loud or obnoxious. It was what a rock show should be, and as I said earlier, reaffirmed why I love Alter Bridge. Hoping to see them in either KC, St. Louis or both next year (if anyone is near STL, The Pageant is the perfect place to see these guys).

Pics to come one of these days.

Oh yeah, the Myles/BNS story... so they go into the song, and he forgot the lyrics and started asking people on his side for the first line. Mark was laughing at him. I'm screaming "AGAINST THE SKY..." from my side of the stage in obvious vain. So he made up a couple of lyrics that ended in "aye" and went into the chorus. It was hilarious.

Then during Rise today, Brian came over and was pretending to step on Mark's pedals, and the started have a mini pedal war. It's great to see them having fun on stage like that.

Man, I loved this show. I stuck around talking to friends after the show and one wandered off, so his girlfriend went looking for him, and called us to tell us Myles was talking to fans. Soooo, we got to meet the guys!! They were so kind. Myles, Mark, and Brian talked about seeing me in the crowd (I'm in a wheelchair and was rocking so hard I thought my chair was going to fall apart, so its not like it's that surprising, haha. I stuck out a little.) which was super cool. One of their crew came out and gave me a tin with picks in it! We ended up talking about chronic illness stuff (he has MS) after the show for a while, super cool dude. And then after the show a security guy gave me the pick Myles threw that didn't make it over the barrier. I remember seeing the banana! My friends loved it. What a great show. Wonder how Mark the giant prehistoric looking moth is doing.

That's really cool. Glad you got to meet them. I should have stuck around just a little longer, lol. It was a great night.
