Because people here are messed up and that's reason enough for them (I can say that as a foreigner!).

Yeah, people here have the tradition of throwing eggs and flour at people who graduate. Luckily today all I saw was paint thrown, otherwise the journey home gets quite smelly!

I'm a supervisor at a bank here (Santander Rio) currently working on car loans. Not bad for a politics graduate!
