Re: Books/What are you reading?
I really enjoyed Invisible Man , he says after a long period without updates. I've read a good amount since then too. I read The Ignorant Schoolmaster: Five Lessons In Intellectual Emancipation by Jacques Rancière. I looked forward to reading this for a long time and it did not disappoint. Rancière,...

Re: The Doctor Who Thread
I'm actually interested. I gave up on the show a while ago but some of his comments have made me intrigued again. I especially like that there won't be any romance between him and the companion. Sounds like he's going to be a little more otherwordly.

Better not to bring any specifics in here but yeah, ideology is a hell of a drug.gbruin wrote:Blind adherence to social and political dogma, regardless of facts or events that don't fit within that framework. I guess it's better to be loyal and consistent - and wrong.

Nickelback - Edge of a Revolution
Rolling my eyes a bit, tbh. Nickelback of all bands can't really pull off this social critic pedestal thing.

Re: The Official "Total Randomness" Thread
True hatred is definitely unwarranted and is a waste of time, but I can see people being bothered by them. I don't know if they feel like I do, but I tend to get annoyed because people will treat them like legitimate artists while they hate and mock pop artists like Kesha or Beyonce. It's as if just...

Re: Dreamy singer/songwriters
I like Sun Kil Moon a lot but I haven't been able to get into this latest release. My favorites from them tend to come from Ghosts of the Great Highway and April. My absolute favorite is this long piece from Ghosts: Another suggestion might be this guy ...

Re: What are you watching right now?
I just finished True Detective. No spoilers. Though I'm still very positive on the show, the ending was a little disappointing. The whole story chugged along on the fuel of the actors, the atmosphere, the directing, while the writing and plotting struggled to keep up. That didn't appear clearly unti...

Re: What are you listening to right now?
It's a Swans night. Just made my way through the whole The Seer album and am starting on To Be Kind. I doubt I'll even finish the first side though. I gotta sleep at some point.

Re: What are you watching right now?
I heard a lot of great stuff about True Detective, so I finally started watching it. I'm already on episode 3 now and I'm really enjoying it. For such a (for lack of a better word) mundane setting, the atmosphere in this show is really dense and foreboding. The music is especially gloomy. At times, ...

Re: What grinds your gears?
I was so crushed when I realized progressive rock wasn't actually progressive. I had built it up in my head like it was the frontier of music but it's actually a pretty regressive genre, if anything. Any genre can "progress" so progressive rock was always more about mimicking what used to ...

Re: What grinds your gears?
This doesn't quite grind my gears exactly, but it does vaguely annoy me when people pretend that rock music is somehow a more pure, better form of music than any other genre. It comes up most often when people want to rag on pop music, but I really can't see how most mainstream rock is any better th...

Re: Books/What are you reading?
I have A Day In The Life and I've been looking forward to reading it! I'll take that into consideration. I know The Street was very popular in its time so it might be easier. I try to balance between reading difficult books and easy ones, so I do usually have a hard one and a more immediately enjoya...
